how do you develop the precision (great time, eveness of sound across the instrument, rhythmic clarity) necessary to do studio work, and make it feel good (relaxed, loose, organic, in the pocket) at the same time?

Experience.

Those are tough things to balance. Every day I'm still challenged with it, because there are no absolutes. It is ever-evolving, and hopefully, improving. It is an "unattainable" in certain respects, because I don't think you ever get to the point of being done balancing rhythmic precision and relaxed pocket.
