Friends - I've had a recent adjustment to my priorities, and I've posted my Thunder III in the classifieds.
Don't strip my number! I will wear it proudly, and after we get the farm purchased, I'm sure I'll be back around for more Matsumoku sharing.

I bought an Electra west one bass from a pawn shop for $60 and I have no idea what model it is. Please help.

Hi,
First post and hoping to get some info about my Electra. What I know:
Electra Phoenix. Made in Japan. Passive. String-through. Matching white headstock with Electra Phoenix logo.
It has a brass nut and the bridge is black but is brassing a bit. Not sure if it was painted.
Any idea what model this is? It seems like a solid bass. Would I be stupid to trade it off?
They seem to not be worth too much.

It wouldn't be a good idea, trading it off. You'll never get what the bass is really worth in terms of quality. Those are very nice instruments. Does it have the slick black matte finish on the back of the neck?
I took my Westone to a jazz jam last week and another bassist, new guy, asked me about it, said he'd never seen a real Westone before. Which was odd; most people who've never seen one don't know what they're looking at and assume it's just one of those cheapo brands for people who can't afford a Fender or something. This guy had heard of them and was looking out for them. He liked mine, but if he wants one he'll have to look elsewhere.

The question is not what perceived worth is but weather you like the bass and the way she plays and sounds. Your bass was probably made at the Matsomuko factory in Japan . They were better quality basses but mid priced. I own 3 Westones that have found a permanent home . With me , the quality, playability , and Tone are what I want and need when I'm gigging. Perceived worth is like ,a lot of the Aria pro II's were also made by Matt and are now selling for over a thousand dollars, Westone basses can sell from 200 to over a thousand according to some on EBay.Electra's are about the same. I know I won't be selling mine. I actually have played my Westone Thunder I as my main gigging bass for about 11 years now. Still my number one. Still better to me , than my custom made or Fender USA , or any of my others.I'm up to 9 basses now, not saying that any of my others aren't great basses also, just sayin that my Thunder is what I want in a bass. Don't know if I helped or not, Just Sayin.

My wife bought me an illustrated history of electric bass guitar for Xmas and guess what is pictured as one of the best basses coming out of Japan. Yep the Westone made it. I believe it was a Thunder II but thought that was cool. I think they are starting to take their place as some of the best in the 80's . I haven't had anyone say so that's what they look like but have had a lot of other bass players comment on my thunders tone.

Hmmm...looks like driving a 460ci E350 up into the Malibu hills was worthwhile then, eh?
I have to get it out of storage, and finsh pressing the S curve out of the neck, but my all black Spectrum ST ooks more and more like a karmic replacement of the bitchin' 70's Ibanez lawsuit P I had to pass up years back...the Westone is a lotta bass for a C note used.

Mine doesn't have the black finish on the back of the neck, it's like a high gloss maple.
I know it's a quality instrument, I'm just looking to get a jazz at the moment. The guy who sold it to me gave a good price but I was considering trading this for a bassman 135 and cash on my end and just source myself an interesting jazz bass.
Having second thoughts. It's not that I don't like it, I've just recorded it so much that I don't see myself going for this tone for a long long while on any new music.

If you have room I think I would just put it in a case and put it away for awhile. You might not like having to try to find one later that is as good as the one you have now. I gave up my Gibson Victory Custom in 1983 . New with case 800 bucks. Look at them on EBay now , can't even find a custom and when you do they sell for 12 to 14 hundred all beat up. I learned my lesson . I really bonded with that one but don't think I'll ever get another one. I did move on and have found a very nice bass family but still miss that one.
Hey you can count me in the club.Today while working on a house the owner unearthed an old Westone Concord 1.
It's really beat up,was de-fretted at some point but the fretboard left unfilled,one of the pots missing and a short scale E string fitted. Oh and the Nut is stuck on with blue-tac.
Of course the guy gave me it. I think this one's worth saving what do you think ?

The Westones were quite common in adverts at in the back of NME and Sounds when I was starting out. I just never got to see them in the flesh,though there was a TV show " Rock School " and Henry " The Thumb " Thomas played the Thunder III's on the show.
So now's my chance to have one, they go for silly money on Ebay here now.

A few hours ago I ordered online an Electra x630N early 80's model with a black pickguard. I'll return to join with a picture when it comes in.

Made a start on that Concord. I've ordered the Fretwire, a new Nut and as I'm going for the natural look Black Pegs and a bridge.
So after a few hours with the sandpaper it's went from this
to this
The slogans scratched in with the Stanely knife took a bit of work as did sanding out the filler coat but it's getting there.
