I knew hard cases existed but the dealer I got my bass from didn't have them and never mentioned it. In the 80s those cheap tolex guitar cases were really common, and I got one for a Jazz that my Spectrum fit in. I padded it with some foam and used it for years, but it was never very good. The hard case that came with my Rickenbacker had a cracked foot, so I got one of those snazzy deluxe cases to replace it. After smooshing some interior padding around, I was able to make my Spectrum fit into the old Ric case, so I have a few options now. But it'd be nice to have the real deal in good condition for completeness sake.

OHSC is always a selling point for a vintage bass.

Fella next town over has been selling off his Westone collection, semi-realistic prices for a change :)

The OHSC were OK for nearly 40 years back, not a patch on modern ones.

Always a condition of sale when moving my Peaveys. Buyers thought they were getting something extra, I did a wee dance of joy when the last one left.

Can't stand those old chainsaw cases :D

Hello fellow TB’ers. I recently sold a bass to a friend of mine who really wanted it. I’m thinking about the westtone spectrum LX. You know the ones that come with a fretted and fretless neck? I would probably just use the fretless neck because I am looking for a fretless bass. There’s one for sale on Reverb right now for $1050. I do know that the guy paid 600 for it in September.

wanting to get everyone’s opinion on that particular bass. I’ve played Weststone/Electra Basis in the past and really like them. Can anybody give me some guidance on this base in particular? I have read that the proprietary pick ups don’t sound like a fender, music, man, or Gibson. And that is intriguing to me. However, it’s good to get insight before buying an instrument, site unseen.

Thanks in advance for your guidance/feedback.

If the LX has the same pickups as the Spectrum GT I had (which I might have started to regret selling), and I think it does, then they are HOT and AGGRESSIVE :bassist:

I agree - there a a few similar models on Reverb for much less. (a red GT for $265 - passive & finish is rough) and a Series II (active like the black one only in red) for $548.84. Neither are fretless - but for that price, frets could be removed/filled.

That's true. I suppose the xtra $500 is for the other neck and the case. I played a GT once and liked it. I did not know that it was the same pickups as the LX.

Same pu's, just different electronics. (active vs passive) For the price of the red GT on Reverb, you could have the frets removed and re-finish the bass in your own choice of colour and it would come out cheaper! :thumbsup: Just make sure the neck is straight as you won't have to be concerned about frets!

According to this: Spectrum - Westone Guitars: the Home of Westone

They do not have the same neck pickup, although they look similar in photos. GT has a Magnabass III and LX has a Magnabass II. I don't know what the difference is. That site also says the bridge pickup is the same (Magnabass IV)

I also agree the price seems steep, but everything costs more now and maybe the swappable necks are getting scarcer, what do I know?

Good Point. I don't like over-paying, but then again who does. The seller bought it for $600 6 months ago. S It's not a mint "collectors" bass. The tunning pegs are no original on the freted neck. Those can fetch $1K I believe.

Thanks for clearing that up - I was just going on how they looked the same. I've used the same pu's for both passive and active basses, and other than EMG's active pu/pre which are proprietary - it works either way.
