Electro Acoustic Basses?

Hey guys lately I've been wanting to buy an electro acoustic bass. I believe it offers many advantages, most importantly being able to play without having to plug in.

It would be mainly used to practice at home because I am not currently in a band yet if the occasion arrises I may use it to play in a gig or two.

Nevertheless I've never seen any bass player play an electro acoustic live and now that I think about it they are rarely used.

Is this because they are not as good as electric ones? Please tell me TalkBass what's your opinion on Electro Acoustic Basses.

i always say "To each his own" but i should warn you: Played acoustically, it is reallllly quiet. Even if you wanted to jam with a guitarist who also played an acoustic, you would probably be drowned out.
IMO, you should get a hollow or semi-hollow bass with piezo pickups so you can still get that very natural acoustic sound.

Yeah , I'd use an amp when playing live but I was wondering would it sound ok if I used an electro acoustic (plugged into an amp) and everyone else used electric guitars?

Also, any recomendations on a hollow or semi-hollow?

Thanks guys
