Eliminate Dead Spot on E string with Thin/Soft Rubber Piece + Reduce Dead Spot on G string

Really !?!?!

On my case ~ YES !

My friend bought an use Squier CV Pbass (nice condition) a month ago, the bass has dead spot C# on G string but acceptable. But notice a dead B note on E string!!! The tone only hold less than 2 second then sustain instantly gone....

I do lot checking/loosing/tightening on bridge, nut , neck join , tuning machines, truss rod ... but everything fine.

First, new string load

Fender 7250M and Labella 760FL
Same issue without any improvement after truss rod ,neck relief and action setup.

Ti JF344 and Labella LTF4A (both my used string set)
Become Dead A# and C# still dead on G string. Low tension string possible shift the dead spot location. But the dead spot on this bass cant hide under the fret wire......

Fat Finger ? I recommend him, but he dont want a heavy and ugly piece clamp on his bass.... (me too)

Lighter Tuning machinces
Cost too much for him... and .....I been meet same problem on my previous Squier Cv50P few years ago, i been swap lighter Gotoh Vintage tuning machines, but the dead spot moving up a fret and sustain improvement not much.

Until this .... Clip Tuner
I try several piece of different Head stock Clip tuner, and i found the Korg HT-B1 and PC-1 tuner show improvement (clip on top of headstock), the dead B tone able ring close to 3 second before sustain lost.

Why others clip unwork ?? I found the rubber pad on Korg are softer than others .
Could it Damp/absorb the extra vibration from neck to headstock ??

Honestly ,..... i have no idea , since i am less knowledge guys. But i like do experiment myself.

I got an idea suddently, how about a piece of soft rubber sit between tuning plate and headstock ? Hide it on without ruin the headstock look.

I try some rubber/neoprene mouse pad, but they are too thick (most around 1.6mm - 2.0mm) which cause the tuning machines sit too behind. The E string touch the neck wood before the nut slot.

I recall that i have few piece of soft rubber left in my drawer which i use them as my digital drum anti slip and reduce vibration pad.

It is 1mm thickness. Look good for the job.I cut it follow the tuning machines plate shape, then cut screws hole and shaft hole.

Install it and tight the screws (not forcing/over tight, just tight it gently without make pressure on the rubber ).

So, the result is the B on E string ( Ti Flat )able ring in 5 second and then lost sustain slowly (my Squier CV P able ring more than 6 second ..... ). They are no effect on A # and C fret in note sustain. The extra bonus i get is the C# on G string sound became alive (still less sustain than others but much better), i still can hear the note ring longer than before with roll off tone knob.

I am satified what i did and my friend absolutely happy and fall in love with this pbass quickly.

I hope when you guys meet the problem like this, try my solution before you decide sell the bass. I cant guarantee it work on you bass, but worth to try.

Nice save! Should be one of the go tos for this problem.

I wonder what would happen if the rubber was installed under all the othet tuning machines?

I thought for sustain you want to anchor the strings very stiffly at the end points. Seems crazy that this will work since it gives the tuners a softer connection to the wood, but definitely worth trying out before something more drastic like adding weights. Thanks for posting this.

Have anybody else attempted this? I hate dead spots but I love Fenders, so I have had to live with them this far. Every bass both, Fenders and non-Fenders, I have played had dead spots. So maybe this could be a possible solution even though I don't understand how rubber could affect the resonant frequency of the bass, since that is the root cause of dead spots.
