Hello,

I'm going to snatch up an Elrick neck-thru. Ash body, maple top/back, maple/wenge/purple heart neck, bubinga board...5 string w/bartolini's.

Any input on these basses?

Bryan R. Tyler is the TB "Elrick Guy". I'm sure he'll chime in with some good input.

I have an Elrick in transit (FedEx) and should have it early next week. IMHO the two best things about Elrick are comfort and tone.

All (only 3 or 4) the Elricks I've played have been very light weight and very comfortable. It must be the way the bodys are contoured or something, but the 35" scale is very easy to play on the Elricks. I've had trouble in the past with 35" scale on a jazz-type 5 string, but not with Elrick.

Tone is very subjective, but I really like the tone I've found in Elricks. IME it is a very clear tone with a tightness and focus to the bottom end. It gets very deep, but never mushy.

I'm guessing you're getting the older Classic model that Brian has down at the Low End, right? If that's the one, then TBer smperry used to own it and can give you the best info on that particular one. Zac's pretty right-on with his description- I've played probably 10 Elricks and for the most part they are generally bright and clear (without being "clean" or hi-fi), prominent mids, and a nice focused low end. There are some differences in body shape and how the edges are rounded between the e-volution and Classic models, so you may find a preference for one or the other.

Yep, like Bryan R. Tyler mentioned, I used to own that one. I didn't like it obviously (I sold it to someone who must've sold it to the Low End), but it was a well built instrument...the tone wasn't my cup of tea, but it could be yours.

edit: unlike other Elricks, I didn't find it bright at all...more on the mellow side.

BTW, I don't think the woods you listed are totally accurate...just an FYI.
(not that it matters, but IIRC I don't think it had purpleheart, and may have had some walnut...the main stuff is right of course)

Agreed. I briefly had a Cort Elrick JP5 and it was a solid bass. It had the pickups changed to Nordstrand Big Singles though, so I cannot comment on the stock tone.
