EMG 40 CS on Spector Rebop

Hello to everybody from France! I'm a Spector owner as many people here in this wonderful forum and actually I would upgrade my Rebop 5 with a pair of EMG active pu. I like very much the tone of the new Spector EURO LX-TW :

Anyway, the EMG 40 TW are expensive pu and I was thinking to buy a pair of used EMG CS, both for only 100 Euros. Anyone of you have tried a set of two CS on Spector? What is your opinion about? Do you think they can match with the kind of tone I like more?

Hi friend. I did the first video that you have posted here. Im glad you can use it to help. If EMG CS sound like the the EMG TW in humbucker mode, you'll get the tone that i have at 20 seconds. In the other video with Nikki, at the time you posted she's using the pickups in single coil mode. I would first recommend getting a set of TWs, the range of tones are huge! 8 even without mixing or tone tweaking. I think since you like the the tone of both the single coil and humbucker, the TW would be the best.

But the tone in humbucker mode in amazing. its what i use normally. It'll give you closer to the sound that you want more than the EMG HZs you have now, probably hit it right on the head.

Yes, you're right, I should really buy two EMG TW to have both tones!

Anyway if the humbucker tone of the TW sounds really like a CS, I think I will buy a pair of CS to spare some money.

I once installed an EMG 40DC and a 40CS in a Dean 5 string. I put the DC in the neck position and the CS in the bridge position. I ended up selling the CS and buying another DC. The CS sounded no different to my ears than the passive HZs I had replaced, it just had a hotter output. The DC had that active EMG tone I was looking for, it had a smoother attack with a nicer grit to it when I dug into the strings a bit but without being harsh. The CS was just a quieter active version of an HZ to me. It was every bit as harsh and brittle as the HZ with a bit more mid scoop to it. It would probably be a good choice for some sizzling slap bass if coupled with the right compressor and amp setup.

FWIW, check out the Spector club thread here on TB in the Basses forum. By far the preferred p'up for Spectors is the DC, but don't be afraid to go against the norm.

I didn't like the CS personally, but it sounds like you can score a pair for the cost of a single new one, go for it. The worst that can happen is you don't like them. EMG's quick connect system is great for easy p'up swaps and the CS p'ups will sell pretty quick in the classifieds here on TB. Go ahead and try 'em and let us know how it turns out for you.

Right now I have a Rebop with a pair of HZs. I swapped the non-trim TonePump pre for an EMG BQC pre and it sounds pretty good. All I need now is a set of 40DCs and I'll be right where I want to be, but at $100US each, I'll have to wait awhile. Nobody around here even stocks them, I have to order them online and wait some more. :crying:

Thanks for making the video...great tones.

When you are playing the bridge pickup in single-coil mode, which side of the bridge pickup is the "single-coil" in? Is it closer to the neck or closer to the bridge?

the thing you gotta worry about when flipping them is the pins. the pins point towards the electronics cavity. so the cable has straight electronics cavity when you flip them, you'll most likely put a lot of stress on the cable/pins because of the extreme angle needed. If you look at lefty players, their pickups are "upside down" but they have to be so that the stress on the cable is minimum.

What?

You could easily shape the cable into a s-shape in the pickup cavity. And if the pickups are installed correctly there should be no problems with the cable in either situation.

I'm talking about that S shape. when installed right you won't need to make it. Ive heard of people snapping their pins trying to install them upside down. But i guess you can do anything you'd like as long as you know what you're doing and careful.

The cable making an S (or other letter) curve shouldn't be an issue as long as you have the appropriate level of slack available, which is down to teh person installing it. My TWs I just recently installed had TONS of cable length, so doing such a twist is super easy.

Unfortunately the guy who sold the EMG CS doesn't answer to my emails! I think he has disappeared!

Anyway soon it comes my birthday so I decided to make me a gift: a brend new pair of EMGs for my Rebop :smug:

I'm taking into consideration what Smilodon suggested: two EMG TW, as in the Spector Euro models. I like very much the sound of the Euro serie.

Looking around on you tube for info I have found some other EMG videos that could be interesting also for other users too.

This guy use a LTD B 1005 (EMGTW/P5) for his recordings.
He's a very skillful and ironic guy. I appreciated.



Anyway I will let you know about my final choice! :)

That wasn't me. Locisbrelm Suggested that. ;)

If is was me, i would chose the same, though. :) Actually, that's the planned setup for my next bass build.

Just be aware that you will need two PP volume controls. If you want volume+blend you'll need a couple of switches to switch between single/dualcoil-mode.

Yeah, just like in the EURO LX! I don't want to put switches, that's for sure!

I only hope not to have problems during the wiring operation! Anyway, Mr. Rubal at Spector said that in case of necessity he will get me in touch with the Czech Factory for more info about wiring diagrams, etc.

It will good to have also a pic of the EURO cavity, just to have a general idea of the wiring... I hope locisbrelm can :help:

Wiring is pretty easy with EMGs. No need to worry there. :)

(Unless you want to use their solderless PP pots as a single coil/dual coil switch for two HZ pickups. I did that yesterday. That one took a while to figure out. ;) Then again, their PP pots was never intended to be used for that, so...)
