EMG 5-string J-bass pups

I´m thinking of replacing the Fender Noiseless pickups on my Fender Deluxe V. I would like to get active EMG pickups, but ca´nt seem to find a 5-string J-bass pickup that has "normal" J-bass proportions. EMG´s 5-string pickups seem to be housed in a soapbar cover. Have I missed something on their website?

EMG pickups use a bar magnet, so they work fine for 4 or 5 strings.

Yes and No.

The bar magnet (blade) eliminates string spacing issues only to a point. If you have a 5 string with 19mm string spacing (ala fender), there is no way even the longest EMG 4 string J will have a wide enough sensing area to properly pick all 5 strings in BRIDGE position. You MIGHT get away with it on a narrow spaced J 5...possibly.

EMG doesn't make any "regular" size J pickups for 5 strings (again ala Fender). You're stuck with routing to accommodate a 40J, or pick something else...unless they have a custom option.

Thanks for the confirmation. I´m not about too chop my bass up just to accomodate EMGs, so I´ll have to look for something else.

I have 2 of the EMG-LJ pickups in my 5-string Warwick bass and they fit and sound great! The EMG-LJ is the longer of the 2 pickups in a 4-string set (the longer length bridge pickup as opposed to the shorter neck pickup):

I don't know of any active 5-string Jazz pickups in that shape (length of 102mm for neck, 105mm for bridge). Pretty much all of the active 5-string Jazz pickups have the smaller shells.

Tone-wise, the closest option for passive pickups would be a pair of Delano "JC 5 HE" or similar pickups, in the Fender size. These are available from Best Bass Gear and other dealers. TB member "Kwesi" has done this to a Fender 5-string Jazz bass, and he was happy with the results.

Thanks for the info, I do´nt know if my pickups are the same size, I´ll have to measure them.
