You want to hear the low B on the fretless. Positively emits growl and groundmoving bass.
Plus the high C on the fretted just sings out its harmonics when the bridge pickup is rolled on full.
Its tuned BEAD and ADGC btw
Being a Spector bass owner has spoiled me! Today I bought a Fender GL Jazz bass got her home fired up the rig and guess what! The stock pickups in Geddy Lee jazzers suck-ass.
My last jazz was a 98 deluxe with the suhr pre and pickups that was a rocking setup not as nice as the EMG's in my NS-4 though.
Even my Euro rebop bolt-on has more growl! I'm thinking about installing a EMG system in my GL to make it compatable with my ears.

Does it help to hush grounding hum from the old style pickups though? My EMG's are dead quite and the GL stock pickups give me hum when I touch the bridge or if a finger hits a pickup pole.
I don't find that the GL pups are too noisy, especially played through my GK. Sure, they hum a little bit, but that's a single coil for ya.
Honestly, I guess if I had a second jazz, maybe a MIM, I would try some EMGs in there, but I really like the sound of a single coil jazz.

I have EMG's in my Kramer-era spector fretless and I wouldn't change a thing. I tried the factory pu's and a set of DiMarzio p&J's with coil taps, series, parallel, in/out of phase, nothing worked for a live setup. I popped the EMG's in and, 11 years later, I am still happy with the sound. I had a question for JackAnsi. I own a BBN5 and I am curious if any mods to the p/u cavities are necessary when installing the J-set. I might need to do some routing if I will go through with the full electronics package I am thinking about(BQS + 18v).

I didn't need to do anything but "shim" the neck (SJ) pickup towards the B string to pick it up better. But if get your hands on just two LJ (bridge) you don't have to touch a thing.
As far as electronics, I originally used the bass/treb (can't remember what the three letters are) EQ from EMG. I had to add one extra hole for the treb pot thats it, the rest fit. If I would have went for the stacked one I wouldn't have needed to change a thing. Heck if I were to do that one all over again I would have went stacked bass/treb, blend, vol instead of vol, vol, bass, treb.
For 18v I use 6 CR2450 lithium coin cells (largest 3v coin cell made I think). Expensive yes (12$ for 6), but so far around 300 hours and the pack still tests around 18.5v. if you stack them 2 columns of 3 cells its about 7/8 the size of a single 9v. I had to wrap each stack of 3 in shrink wrap and then bridged one side of each and brought the other out in a 9v battery connector and shrink wrapped the whole deal again. Viola, 18v, stock compartment, no routing. BTW each CR2450 has more mAh than an alkaline 9v, 600(9v) vs 660(CR2450) I believe.

I just ordered an EMG setup for my Bass 40DC,40DS, and BTS System. And, my guitar has a EMG81 and EMG85 in it. Can I join the club?

Thanks JackAnsi, Those are some intersting ideas on the batteries, I would have never thought of using coin cells. I had thought about using the 3-band system, but I think the 2-band might be sufficient. I will also just buy 2 LJ models, that was the question I had in my mind. Thanks again for your time.

My main axe, a PBC (Bunker) 356GTB, was originally built (so they said) for Allen Woody, who - when he came to pick it up - decided he wanted one of their new "Wishbone" basses instead. It came stock with EMGs, to which I added the BTC Circuit, Vol/Blend (instead of Vol/Vol) controls, and a second battery for 18v. The thing sounds AMAZING.
Other basses I've owned (but since passed on to new owners) included a Samick 5-string & Epiphone Rock Bass (my first bass) - both of which I upgraded to EMGs, and neither of which I should have sold. I also have a pair of MM-style EMGs ready for a project 5-string MM-style bass, and I just got a PJ set for an Epiphone bass I recently bought on a whim to "replace" my first bass I mentioned above (and shouldn't have sold).

I run the EMG Js (with BTS and EXB) at 18 volts on my Hoyt/Warmoth J5 "mongrel" (as Karl calls it) and it works great!

My current bass (an ESP) runs a set of EMG 40-HZ pickups (which I plan to swap out probably for DCs) and the B64 EQ/pre and might mod the controls. I'm planning on acquiring a second bass in the next couple of months (the one I had before was a Peavey with stock pups
) which might get stock swapped for EMGs or Seymour Duncans (Sorry. 
).
My guitar runs an EMG 81 in the bridge position and a 60 in the neck.

I'll be joining this club in the near future. My plans for my special-ordered Spector ReBop DLX 5 is to replace the HZ/TonePump setup with 40J/40TW pups and two concentric pots for a Volume/Tone-Volume/Tone (I much prefer individual volumes than a blend setup), a BTC Control, and a push/pull to trigger the coil-cut on the 40TW. Although I'd be missing a mids controls, this seems to give me the best control for a Jazz-esque setup with the J-pups in the 40/J and the coil-cut of the 40/TW while keeping the stock layout. I'm always up for ideas, so if anyone has any suggestions I'm all ears. 
I'll also be honest and say I've always been a fan of the traditional "Spector Sound" for other players but not as my sound. However, the combination of buying a Spector and expecting that tone to a certain degree (but one that's a bolt-on and uses different woods than the old-school all-maple build) as well as EMG's addition of the 40P5, J, TW, and CS with all use ceramic and steel magnets which give a more traditional sound and cut the high-end have me hoping that this'll be more "me" than the Spector/EMG combo of years past.
