The solderless connectors make this kind of experimentation super-easy.

It dawned on me that Billy Sheehan used something similar for years, a dual coil near the neck, and a split coil nearer the bridge.

Found another famous use of blending a split-coil bridge pickup, with a dual-coil neck pickup. John Myung had a Duncan ASB-6 in the bridge and SMB-6a in the neck on his Yamaha bass used between 2005-2006, IMO his best tone on recordings and live. This give some legitimatcy to the 40P5/40CS combo I'm considering.

Does anyone know how the older EMG40J-A1-B and EMG40J-A1-N differ from the current 40J line? That's how the stickers read on the back, along with a second sticker on each that says "JJ."

For the Billy Sheehan bass it is.

This bass does a similar thing with an J pickup added. My idea is to move the DC/P to the P/J slots, P closest to bridge.

Sure, both are full width bar magnets so don't care about string spacing and have plenty of coverage.
The new E series will also fit without routing, but don't have the TW switching option.

And if I by the set of two, di I need to buy anything else, to pair two pickups? Just one tone pot will be unnecessary?

There are online comparisons of many of the EMG PUs - these will give you a better idea than my words will ever convey about tone.

Yep, I'm pretty sure EMG provide VVT and VBT (with the correct balance pot) schematics.

There's usually a marked level loss between the J and the CS sections, but EMG have a series resistor mod that evens them out. I don't recall the value OTTOMH or the exact wiring, but a call or email to EMG will get the correct answer. Their customer service is good.
