EMG-HZ Pickups

I've recently bought a bass equipped with a pair of EMG-HZ pickups and I want to set it up properly. From what I've read, EMG advices to set the pickups as close to the string as possible. Does the same rule apply to the HZ series?

The HZ is a passive pickup, and should be set up accordingly. There is a spec sheet on the EMG website that could give you more info.

Either way, you should set it up according to how YOU play and what your ears tell you.

What does it matter? Adjust the pickups until they sound good, and be done with it. Don't waste time worrying about generalities or theoretical ideals.

Well, yes, but not everyone can do that from scratch. The manufacturer's recommendations are the proper place to start, then adjust to taste.

I disagree. You don't need any point of reference. Just screw it in until it looks like it's in a good place, and then tweak until it sounds good. This is not complicated.
