EMG PVA5 HZ & PVA2 HZ (&P HZ)

Hi Guys,

I was scrolling on the EMG website, and stumbled upon the passive precision pickups:

PVA5 HZ (Alnico 5)
PVA2 HZ (Alnico 2)

They look like the alnico versions of the regular P HZ pickup. i'm however unable to find any sound files or reviews on these pickups (and also very limited info on the P HZ).

Does anyone have any experience with these pickups? How do they differ from the GZR pickup for instance

good question. i would also like to hear anyone's experience with these models. i love the GZR and have them in two basses- one P and one PJ. i contacted EMG to see if they could be made with cream covers and a dude named Alex graciously replied that the pva5 is essentially the same thing. i just wonder how the same they are. and im curious about the pva2 and its "warmer" voicing.

Yeah I was too inpatient to order the PVA5. Being in Europe the lead time would be 8-10 weeks, so I ordered the gzr again..

I am also curious about any findings on these. I really wish EMG would offer tone charts/sound clips like Seymour Duncan does on their site!

Man I'm looking for those one also PVA5 HZ (Alnico 5) but nothing on them!!! I Also have the GZR P and P/J in my basses but i want to know if the output of the PV is more hot, more everything compared to the GZR ... If they're very similar, so what's the point!!!! loll Like the red covers also....

I was told by an EMG rep that the GZR and PVA5 are basically the same pickup tone-wise and, now having both, I would agree its very difficult to distinguish between the two in a mix or even solo. I got the PVA5 for my 70's style P bass w/ TI flats to get the cream/ivory color look. The GZR sits proudly in my other black/black/maple P bass with rounds and kills!

I'm getting one of each for two p basses that are noisy. Taking a punt. Apparently the PAV5 is mostly like the Geezer Butler but a little more standard with no mid grind. I'll take my chances on the output volume of these but there's always my MXR M81 pedal to give them a boost.

I've been wondering about these pickups too, particularly the A2 model. I'd love to read your thoughts on them once you've given them a try. I've got two builds planned, one fretless the other fretted, one will have Bartolini's in it, the other not decided yet, but I'm leaning towards EMG's at the moment.

I now have the PVA2 on my Fender Player P bass. I sounds great. Has a low mid emphasis. Very good with flatwounds. I have LaBella 104 set on. Very much like a ceramic steel active p but with lower volume. I have a MXR M81 pedal with it to make it louder and also to make it sound active. The lower volume is something to consider. Just like the JHZ it has great tone but with low volume. Maybe they mean these pickups to be used with a preamp anyway. Low noise equals low volume I guess.

Tried out a PVA2 this morning. I was not impressed. It produces a pronounced high mid frequency that just wasn't pleasant to my ears. Reinstalled the active EMG PA Pickup.
