well im not really sure but i do know this
that EMG's are some of the tighest pickups
i have EMG-HZ pickups and they give me the best sound
they can give you loud attack sounds and even warm softer sounds
it is perfect for every genre
hope this helps

I have a late 80's Kramer with EMG PJ pickups, very punchy combo and along the lines of the Spector tone....because mine was basically made as Kramer's version of the Spector while they were both being made under one roof.

I've also got a Stambaugh on order and we're planning on using a Mike Pope pre-amp.

On their own, they've got that nice slap tone with a slight mid scoop. The bridge J sounds along the lines of a Fender, perhaps a little tighter and glassy, but I think the notes sound a tad more articulate. The P pickup sounds a little more aggressive to my ears than a standard P sound. A good pre-amp can make them a lot more flexible.

I love EMG's.

I no longer own this bass but it sounded killer:

I like the M5-24 with the EMG 40J's. If you've ever heard Enrico Galetta play his, it sounds amazing. I recently got a Valenti J5 with the EMG 40 J's. When I ordered it I had the Sadowsky M5-24 in mind. I'm truly happy with mine in my bass. It's paired with an Aguilar OBP-3 and sounds awesome.

My -93 24/5 came with EMG40J, and I like them vey much. I tried Fat Stacks, but didn`t like them. I now got Sadowskys pups on it, but I`ll probably switch to the EMG`s soon. IMO they have a more open/raw upper midrange that I like

Can anyone speak to the value of keeping an older Sad 24 fret with EMG's original? Part of me would like to try the Sad soaps as I feel the EMG's are to my ears too "glassy" But I also learned the hard way that modifying an older bass can affect its value. I also have no experience with the passive tone control. Thanks for the input.
