Engine design idea

That was strange.
They only had prototypes and "calculations" to talk about so its one of those "in theory, it works" kind of thing. Going by that moving diagram, the exhaust gases looked like they didn't fully get pushed out while the new air/fuel mixture auto-magically filled up the cylinder. I don't know, maybe it can work.
 
From the diagram and a brief skimming I could see how that engine might work (with the aid of a forced induction system). But looking at it I couldn't help but think a similar, but simpler system had already been invented and developed.

I hate to be that guy, but this has a great deal in common with the concepts of that other engine without some of the extra weight, moving parts, etc.
 
Way I see it: we already have high compression engines based on conventional design that do two things: accelerate cars up to the limits of aerodynamically keeping then from launching off the ground and reaching the maximin stress limits of the advanced metals used.

So to survive stress you need more mass on the rotating parts and that sucks performance out: think of the size and low revs of a diesel engine; huge heavy parts to handle the extreme compression stresses. Other materials are a better answer and if the internal combustion engine survives this century I believe they will not contain much in the way of metals.

A high voltage spark that is focused and well controlled added with the tech that we have to control the combustion flame front and judiciously high compression is just fine as it is.

Yes but it is not a great design for car use (if I remember correctly) they do not have great responsiveness and are easy to flood.

They are however used as propane generators I think?

In high school my friend had a '79 Mazda RX7 and that little wankel mill was the bomb. In a small sports car, they are great fun and his was basically trouble free. Started in -30c easier than any other engine I've seen.
 
Rotary engines have an inherent tendency to exhaust high levels of pollution compared to typical 4 stroke piston engines. With strict government mandated emission standards across the industrialized world, this makes these engines impractical.

In the 70's, Fuji (of Japan) was testing an engine made entirely of ceramic components. In addition to no metals in the thing, it also featured oval pistons and mechanical variable valve timing, and ran with no lubrication.

It performed well, but was far too expensive to mass produce.
