Double Bass enigma variations

Are there any preferred or unusual bowings for variation VII (Troyte)? The quarter notes are doable but when the eights get added it is hard to keep up with straight down/up bowings.

I'm not familiar with that particular variation, but perhaps if you posted the rhythm that you were having trouble with, people could offer advice.

Your question deserves a good answer, but I've been looking all over for my copy of the part and all I can find is the excerpt in Book 1, International series - no help. If it's the part I remember, I start each new pair of 8th notes with a downbow and let the quarters fall as they come.

I start it up bow, and then just do it as it comes and then retake for the half note.

you'll have it much easier starting the 8ths with a downbow, no matter what adjustments u have to make to the quarter notes to make it happen. if you don't start the 8ths with a good snap, you'll drag your section down
