That is one of the coolest things I've ever seen! It sounds like...multiple tracked, heavily-effected guitars. The guy who invented it is so mellow. He doesn't look stoned in the video...but he's just cruuuuuuuisin'. 
I haven't gone to the website yet, but wondering out loud; I wonder if all the electronics are onboard or if it connects to a midi-type outboard box and then to the amp from there? Hmm.

And along the lines of "Blow your mind Rube Goldberg Type Stuff" check out this "instrument." This is obviously CG simulated. In real life there's no way all the balls will bounce exactly into the same place every time...let alone be ejected/propelled out of a central tube with exact trajectory in a 360 degree arc, etc. Really cool to watch, anyway.
Maybe you can tune it differently, or even install hipshot detuners on all strings and get lots of combinations like in Michael Manring's Hyperbass.

After I read the article in BP this month I went and checked it out - looks like the electronics are all onboard courtesy of the inverted ebow. Despite the D tuning, this looks like a lot of fun.
