Envelope Filter Users, which one do you play with?

Is the EBS really that much better than the Micro Q-Tron in low pass mode? I really dig my Micro Q-Tron but have to dial in my synth blender to accommodate the volume spike (only downside for me). How's the bypass buffer on the pre-08 model?

the EBS BassIQ certainly has much less of a volume spike than any q-tron I have used. The wide range of the attack knob makes it far more flexible than the Q-tron in LP mode as well. Then here are the hi-Q and Up/down modes to consider. The Hi-Q still has less spike that the q-tron, while up and down really swell more than they spike - think bottom rocker.

Then again the Q-tron sounds more dramatic than the BassIQ at many settings, so for some folks it is preferable.

I'd say my #1 is the barge grinder, just sounds the best to my ears. After that I'm diggin these:

-00funk
-q tron
-ep-1
-br-2
-prometheus

The only filter I have tried and not kept thus far in my filter search was the bassiq, I thought it was too subtle for my tastes.

Have you used the IQ for modular synth applications? My guitarist is really GASing for a micro Q-tron and might buy my Stereo Electric Mistress as well...

I've gotta agree with the Barge Grinder being my favorite. But that's way outside your price range.

Cheaper filters that are decent are the DOD 440 and clones (BYOC, Tonefactor), DOD FX25 (Don't get the "B" model, it sucks!), EHX Qtrons, EHX Bassballs (really more of a formant filter), EBS BassIq, and Maxon AF-9.

If you wanted to/could spend a little more, check out the Chunk Systems Agent 00Funk, EHX Bass Micro Synth, Subdecay Prometheus, Xotix Robotalk, 3leaf Groove Regulator, Robot Factory Meat Wad, Barge Concepts Grinder, and the WMD Fat Man.

I've got an old fashioned Q-tron that I love. Especially the down mode, super funky. Once it's set up right it doesn't spike too much and it can be about as subtle or as over the top as you like. The bypass on mine isn't bad either.
I also just got an EP-1 which I like but it's kind of a mixed bag. The LFO phaser is quite nice, pretty flexible I guess. The envelope controlled phaser is capable of being very subtle / transparent or pretty weird. I definitely like the Q-tron better as filters go but the EP-1 does get one bass synth sound that I like. It's not as warm if that means anything oh, and it works very nicely with fretless.
