envelope filter...?

ok, what are some of your favorite envelope filter recorded sounds? songs or records that you love that have the special envelope sound that is it for you?

i'm thinking of getting the new MXR pedal...or an EH but kinda leaning towards the new MXR...

?

I love my Robotalk 2. Has 2 filters that are voiced slightly differently that can be used individually or combined. I set one up for aggressive slap, the other for slow sweeping funk, and combined its a neat flange like effect. The Qballs does some really funky gurgling sounds, kinda wish I had kept the one I had.

Best envelope filters I've tried (imo) were the EHX Enigma Qballs and the Xerograph, both with expression pedal use. If you were looking for a record with some funky filter use have a listen to "City of Delusion" by Muse from Black Holes and Revelations though I never figured out exactly what ol' Chris was using... should probably figure that out actually now that I think about it.

Don't rush by the MXR M82 just because there's fatter, funkier envelopes out there. I'm pretty pleased with it for its versatility within my non-funk format.

The Dry knob enables you to push the fundamental tone out to the front and make the effect fairly subtle, something most envelope filters aren't known for. I like to set the Dry knob to about 2 o'clock and the Effect to 9 o'clock with Sensitivity at around noon using a Fender Am Dlx in active mode. I can play what sounds like an uneffected tone, then step up the attack to pull in a nice quack for emphasis: lay down a uneffected root, then hit the octave hard (QUACK!), throw in fifth and seventh sixteenths (quack! quack!), go back to uneffected root, etc., etc.,

You can, of course, go full-on 70s synth-y with the thing if you want to. But that's not a particularly useful effect in my band's format, but I find I'm using this pedal more than I thought I would because I can dial the funky cheese way back.

He's using an Electrix Filter Factory with expression pedal I believe. :)

They were playing CoD before Chris was spotted with a FF. Personally I'm convinced that it is a Line 6 Filter Pro with an expression pedal, since he has had one in his rack for ages. I have an FM-4, which is essentially the same thing, and I can get a very close sound.

The 3 Leaf Audio GR2 is my choice. The tone and effects is wide and varied and you can play any genre of music with it. I dialed in a subtle effect on contemporary slow songs and it amazed my band members! I simply cannot NOT find the tone that I want, it is that good. Plus Spencer is wonderful at customer service. I recommend you check out the following shootout if you have not already done so. IMO, MXR is "in-your-face" (others may prefer this), and Super Fatman is somewhat dark and too low on tone (again, others may prefer this).
