Epifani UL502+UL410

Wow, what a great and detailed gig review! Thankyou very much for sharing!

Only one final choice for me and that's whether I can get away with using the 502 or if I need to spend a little more for the slightly larger and lethally more powerful 902.............

Think I know what Joker might recommend!;)

I just can't imagine needing that much power, but yet I STILL lust for it. I'm imagining just how massive a UL902 + 2 UL410's would be. I bet my own response would be as such..........
  :hyper: , whereas my various musical compatriots would probably have responses ranging from.........
:hiding: :help:  , to :spit:

Thanks for all the kind words. That was a real fun night, and I look forward to posting those clips. I'm sold on this rig, and man, it just makes my RV5 sound like a full ton of bass goodness. It was another case of how everything that is said here on this site about a particular setup turns out to be almost completely true on the bandstand. It's why I keep coming back to Talkbass.

The big suprise for me was just how well the UL502+UL112 filled up the club. Amazing.

yea, love how the UL112 does the trick with all those little gigs i do. but sometimes i feel like i'm gonna turn around one day, and find that my reckless use of the 902 has left the poor guy in a pile of shredded italian poplar and tattered neo mags. :eyebrow:

I wouldn't doubt it. Even the UL502, running halfway up with a big-bottomed Sadowsky underneath it makes the UL112 quake a little bit. I'd be scared to put the UL902 on top of one, and maybe even two!!

I had opportunity to give this rig its true test: sounding great in a horrible sound evironment. The venue was a medium-size Black Baptish church that was literally designed af if you were to take Noah's Ark and place it upside down (keel facing up) on the ground, with some pews thrown in.
On top of that, the entire floor of the Church was carpeted with exceptionally plush carpet. So, sonically, you had the arched wood ceiling that made everything on stage sound incredibly muddy and boomy, almost like playing at a high-school basketball court, and yet the thick carpet acted as a dampening agent so that the stage sound barely travelled more than 15feet into the audience unless you absolutely cranked the stage volume.
On-stage, I had the Epi setup as such: Gain at 2pm, Bass at 1pm, midrange at about 3pm centered around 250hz, and the treble knob at about 2pm centered at 6khz, all with a master volume cruising at 12pm. In short, I was friggin loud. I kept askin the sound guy if I was too loud, as I could barely hear the drummer on stage with my volume, but apparently that carpet was workin overtime. I had my guitar player thump on my rig while I was in the audience, and I couldn't believe how tight and controlled the rig sounded in this 'Acoustical Purgatory' of a room.
The gig went off marvelously, and hopefully I'll be able to post some clips of it here shortly. Getting back to the Lonnie Easter Gig that I originally started this thread for, if you go to his myspace page, he's added some more videos, as well as a new track from the same gig. Enjoy.

Just bumping this old thread for fun. Elmon, you go through heads like I go through basses. I believe you went from a TF550B to this UL502, then going to the SD800, and now using the AG500SC. In each thread you say each amp sounds amazing, and each head sounds better than the amp in the preceeding thread. Any fond memories of past amps that you would like to share?

Sadly, I go through basses the same way!!! :bawl:

As for reminiscing, sure, why the heck not..........

DB750 through a GS412: Just pure thickness. All the volume, but yet the 412 would never seem to overwhelm a mix like a 410 has IME. This rig projected my notes in 3D, like being at a concert with a well-mixed bass tone pumping through the PA, making the experience for the listener just as physical as it is aural. I would use my Smith BSR6EG, and I could feel each note run up my spine. Why did I sell it? Weight. I tried moving to a GS410, which was suprisingly harder to move around than the GS412, which was easy to roll in to just about any gig, and then the GS212, but after a while I just wussed out and got into the Epifani rig.

Epifani UL502 through UL112 and UL410: IMO, the ultimate in Hi-Fi tone. Sparkly/musical highs, full and burnished low end. If you like a bright tone and like every single nuance to be heard, this is your rig. The weight factor made me hold on to it even after I had grown to dislike how the tone sounded in the bands I'm in, but I finally came to my senses.

Markbass SD800 through UL410: Basically, it took the sound I had with the all Epi rig and added a much higher degree of warmth, plus more emphasis on the low-mids. Not to mention that this head is 'stoopid loud' for weighing less than a six pack of beer!!! The reason I moved the head was mainly that I hadn't stopped lusting after my Aguilar rigs, and that my drummer even asked me what happended to my Aggie gear. As in, 'hint hint buddy, get back the Aggie!'.

AG500 through UL410: Finally, back to that signature Aguilar thickness!! I'm really impressed with this head overall. Sure, it doesn't have the tube-spread of the DB750, but thats OK! I plan on adding a REDDI to add a little more tube presence later on. Now, as to why I dumped my Epifani UL410, the main reason was that it was overkill for the gigs I do and that I couldn't break it up into a smaller package for low-volume situations. That and, now that I have revisited the glory of 12's, I finally realize that I prefer the dispersion of 12's over 10's for the sound and style I go for.

Basically, I like a Jamerson-esque fingerstyle tone with the ability to get bright and snappy on occasion. The Aguilar line, to my ears, can ably do both. Now, IMO any rig can be EQ'ed to sound close to this 'sound in my head', but Aguilar just seems to do it better. I've been fortunate to have 'wheeled and dealed' my way into some fantastic gear without breaking the bank, and I've enjoyed every minute of it!!!
