If I learned anything from Metallica, I sold out:

Brutal Death Metal .. Adult Contemporary:

To be honest, I'd say that your hair is mediocrly brutal death metal at best, and slightlty emo at that. Or that's how the pics are, at least. Nor is the shortie look becoming of you.. Perhaps you should try to have the sideburns bit shorter and the hair bit longer, that way you could say you've sold out to the Burger King America.

Matt, in that before picture you look like Jack Black.

And uhh, I don't mind the whole keep your hair short for a job thing. Long hair seems annoying anyway-- I'd say mine is medium in length.

Medium length is the worst. That's when it gets in your face and you can't keep it out. After it grows even longer, you can keep it behind your ears, or your back if it's that long, or a pony tail that doesn't look dorky (they all do, but ones that are higher up are worse. =/)

By the way, I consider medium length down to the chin. Don't know what your definition is. =S

Since getting my job I've been working on becoming the long haired programmer of the office. You know the stereotypical one with the ponytail and tucked in shirt. You might see him when you go in for interviews, good guy, bring him a snickers or something; I'm sure he'll appreciate it.

I AM the long haired programmer at the office. (thanks for the snickers dude!) :p

What kind of job are you going for Matt? I've had long hair (roughly to my shoulderblades) ever since I was old enough to tell my parents to shove it and stop going to the barber (15 years or so). I work a very respectable job in IT. Sure, I get a little ribbing about my hair, but I have the job not because of my appearance, but because i'm actually competent. I'm told that when my interviewers were discussing my interview, I was referred to as 'pony tail guy', and knowing those guys, I'm sure jokes were made. I can take a joke  But in the end, I know my ****, I'm easy to get along with and I have the credentials. Hired.

I remember everyone telling me how I was going to have to cut my hair to get a good job. Constantly, "when are you cutting your hair? No one is going to hire you looking like that." As if there is something wrong with how I look with long hair. After getting the job, I DID make an effort to dress up nice. In fact, I wore a suit to the interview, big mistake. I looked way out of place. I come to find out that the CEO wears jeans and sneakers to work all the time and the CTO is _always_ in shorts and sandals. So now I just dress how I always did, and keep my hair how I always did, and I'm doing fine. Even got a promotion before I was there one year.

Just sayin, getting a good job does not necessarily mean cutting your hair.

As far as the descrimination goes. Every now and again (a handful of times in my life) have I found myself in a situation where someone says or does something to me _blatantly because_ I have long hair. Twice I can think of that I was physically threatened (think 'Easy Rider'). You guys are right, it's not like being a minority, but when you are blatantly treated differently simply because of how you look and what that person assumes about you, you DO get a little bit of how it might feel to be black in the south or what-have-you. It's a really sickening feeling.

The saddest part is how off the stereotypes are. Apparantly, to some people, having long hair makes me a 'queer'. Funny, chicks actually seem to dig my long hair... :smug: Or I'm a hippy (far from it). Or I'm 'sensitive pony-tail guy', I mean I'm a nice guy sure, but 'sensitive' ... um no.

My definition of medium is shorter than yours, but my hair is wavy so it doesn't get in my eyes. :)
