I *think* he puts Super-Sensitive Red Labels on.
Those are about the cheapest strings on the market, and use a solid steel-core, which is very stiff and metallic sounding.
Sorry to burst your bubble, may you may want to put something else on...

They are not SS, they are Chinese strings. Not good, but not all that bad. I got them off pretty quick. The high F strings for the 7 and 8 strings are super sensitives, and somehow they are pretty nice.

I made the mistake of buying supersensitives...once, and never again.

But I do have a brand new set of Spyro Wiechs standing by, unopen.

The only thing I need to debate is, do I take the Mittels of my DB and restring my DB with the wiechs and the Ergo with the Mittles, or just put the new Weichs straight on to the Ergo.

My Mittles are 2 to 3 months old
and Weichs are brand new.

Does anybody have any suggestions?

I'd give the Ergo the old strings, the amp puts some life back into them.

This is a recording of me playing "As Time Goes By" on my Ergo at a restaurant gig in December. I wasn't planning on using it that night and had never used it on a gig before, but to make a long story short, my cat broke my regular upright so I had to use the Ergo (my bass has since been fixed by David Gage's shop and sounds better than before it was broken). Since I hadn't really experimented enough to be sure that I could get a good classic upright sound out of the Ergo, I decided to go for the Ron-Carter-ish 80s vibe instead. The Ergo does that sound very well (although I can't say the same for me personally). I was using Sprio Mittels (3/4 length) through a GK 150MBS amp. I think I forgot my fdeck HPF-Pre preamp at home that day as well, which was probably why I decided to go for the amped-up sound. I don't remember how I EQed the amp, but I usually leave the EQ pretty flat. The recording was made with a Zoom H2, which I highly recommend. The room was a typically noisy restaurant with tile floors and absolutely nothing to soak up the sound. This is actually a pretty poor example of my playing, but I offer it here purely as another example of what the Ergo can sound like.

Thanks for the sound sample, we never hear things the way others do and your recording gave me a chance to experience the "Ergo" from the other-side ! It's always nice to see what some of you other guys are up to... nice job, thanks for thinking of the rest of us.

I got my 4 string Ergo in the mail yesterday. This thing is awesome, the only things I did to it were to change the strings out, and run it through my Fishman Platinum Pro EQ.


Thanks everyone for your posts, if it wasn't for the info here, I probably would still have my POS Paltino and be fighting still to get a decent sound out of it.

Thanks for the info, I will definitely buy another Ergo again when I have some extra cash, maybe I'll add a 5 string or the cello model to my arsenal of basses.

Question fellow ergo owners.

Has anyone else thought to try taking a thumb rest/tugbar and putting it on the side of the ergo for Pizzicato? Think I would be crazy for trying it? Was thinking similar to how Barker Vertical basses does it, only on the side instead of the front.

I rest my thumb right on the side of the body on my ergo kinda like how I rest my thumb on the fingerboard of my db. It feels pretty much the same except I can't tuck my thumb underneath the FB like on the DB.

IMHO you have a place to rest your thumb already, I don't know if adding a thumb rest would help much.

That's just the point, to put the tugbar so you can tuck your thumb under the bar like on a DB.

Just debating if I should try it or not. Was thinking it might help when getting a little more aggressive on the pizzicato to keep my thumb from moving around.

OK, I understand now. It could work for that situation, I guess you never know if you don't try.

Hey guys. I'm from the BG side, but I'm thinking of getting an Ergo 4. I've talked with the owner and he assures me that he can set it up with low tension, light gauge strings, with position markers on the side (I currently play short scale BG's with heavy gauge rounds--.120). Occasionally, I hold the BG's upright and play that way, which I prefer. My question is, how difficult is this switch going to be? I used to play violin, but have not played in years. I'm willing to learn a new technique as long as I don't have to go back to playing Twinkle Twinkle.
