Double Bass Ergo Megathread part I

However....I've noticed that the swivel joint connection to the bass is loose. Some of it is me because I played with it slightly angled. Does this warrant an email to Tom (or Jessie directly)?

I've also posted this question on the owners club thread. I guess I'm used to the BG side of TB where users usually respond almost asap....

Yeah. Sometimes, I have noticed, this one runs a bit slower. Numbers are not as large. :D

Definitely. Contact Tom or Jesse. I am not sure what the deal is with the Canadian orders. I know Jesse supplied Tom with a certain number and then Tom was going to sell them for him. With regards to customer service, I am not sure how that would work as a result of that agreement. You could contact Jesse I am sure, though.

Yaaay! I got my order in for a Natrual Ergo 4. Jesse was kind enough to send me not one, but all three bridges! At No Extra Cost! I was very undecicive and asked for all three to expiriment with actions. Man Jesses nice.

Ohh yea, and thanks for the #28 spot.

Mine is also loose. It swivels forward a few degees, and left/right even more. But I actually like it to move a bit & not be so rigid. Though I'll have to admit I am concerned that it might come completely loose over time, so I don't move it too much.

BTW... I think my nut is wood.

I had a similar experience with him. Mine was an issue that he had nothing to do with. Everybody knows when you buy an instrument, change the strings. Well, I got mine and the D string broke. What happened was, he had to get some quick strings as his normal supplier was out. It popped. He replaced the entire set when he got his normal strings in. I mean.... seriously. THAT is customer service. THAT is support. I totally didn't expect that he should do that. I know he was thinking that he wanted my first experiences with his instruments to be great. It certainly has been.

If you go back in this thread, you will find descriptions from people who have replaced the original glued-in stand attachment with a screwed-in tom holder. Apparently this is more solid and it allows for more flexibility in setting up the bass to suit the player (such as angling the bass towards the player).

I have not done this though. I have not had any problems so far.

Mine appears to me much like that. It is a cymbal stand... or that is what it looks like. Where it screws in is solid as a rock. That may have been one of those learning process things.

This thread is getting very difficult to search for specific info - tonnes of extremely useful info being shared!!:atoz:
I just finished my first gig with my new 4-string as my secondary axe on about a third of our tunes, and just loved it!:D (I finally got more attention than our guitard player:bassist:)

Now, I'm looking for specific info from the fellow Ergo brethren:

1) After last nights gig, the loose joint has become more loose.:rollno: It moves more freely, and now it "tilts" slightly up and down. The actual connection still seems solid as I cannot lift the metal rod from the wood hole just yet. After e-mailing Jessie he suggested the JB Weld Epoxy to repair the loose joint. I think I'd rather find a more permanent solution. After careful searching of this thread I found posts #198, and 228 that address the problem, but I'm not sure this is what I'm looking for. Someone mentioned a screwed-in mounting plate (over the existing hole) but now I can't find that post to reference. I was hoping to re-use the supplied stand and just modify that top piece to suit my needs. Is this possible? As well, I've seen a couple of pics that show some of you guys cutting down that top tube. Is this to cut down on stand vibration?

2) The action on my bass is a tad high? Does Jessie have other heights available for purchase? Only other problem is that there is a small bit of buzzing on the D string between the 3-5 "fret" positions. I'm assuming that if I lower the action/ this will only make the buzzing worse, right?

1. I've never had a problem with my joint, so I can't be much help there. I can however tell you that JB Weld is great stuff...just make sure you get it right the first time :-)

2. I recall that if you either a.) send him your bridge or b.) make a good template of your bridge, Jessie will create you something at a different height. Not sure if that's still the case. I actually did two things myself;

- One/simple: Modified the existing bridge; increased the height. I carved some little pieces to add height at the feet. I wood glued them and clamped them overnight. I actually ended up with more height than I wanted, but it works out great for a more authentic "thud" sound down in the first and second positions. So I saw out to that one when I'm going for that sound. In your case, since you're already a bit hight, just taking some sandpaper (or a dremel if you're careful) to the feet will decrease your height. Be sure to take some measurements before you start so that you know you're decreasing evenly between the feet. Regarding the buzzing, you might be able to fix that with some super glue, or JB if you're careful. You can use either to slightly build up the string groove on the bridge for that string. I actually did that on my C string.

- Two/more challenging: I carved two other bridges myself. If you've got any kind of gumption and wood working experience, this really isn't all that difficult. I made it way harder on myself because I chose purpleheart...beautiful, but a huge PITA without the right tools. I was however able to create two more bridges at different heights, so now I've got 3 to choose from. Mine took a bit more planning as well since I have a seven string :-)

Here are the first 2 pics of my stand mod. Using the stock stand, I just bought some Pearl drum hardware ($90 worth:scowl:). I've left the loose bolt from the original upper post just for reference. A few more pics coming...

These are a close up of the part that goes on the back of the Ergo - shown both on the stand, and not attached but resting on the back of the Ergo. Note I have not removed the original mount yet....

This last pic shows the profile view of the Pearl Tom mount sitting on the Ergo.

Here are the parts: Pearl Tom Bracket BT-3 ($21.50 CDN), Pearl Uni-lock 7/8" Post 4x4" Tom Holder TH-1000S ($40.50 CDN:(), Pearl Adapter 5/8" - 1-1/8" Diameter tube AX-20 ($21.50 CDN)

My latest update: My mods went without a hitch and work wonderfully!:p Even though I (more than likely) voided my warranty by removing the OEM stand mount and screwing a new plate to the back of my Ergo, I find this works the best. I can safely have my bass at almost any angle - even horizontally without worries:hyper:

If anyone is interested, I can post the completed pics here. I won't post them unless it is suggested to do so.

I'd like to see the bass on the stand. The tom holder looks like it make the bass offset from the stand quite a bit. I would think that it would make it akward, both looking & feeling.

A picture would help me. If you could take one from the side I'd appreciate it.

It does off-set the bass a bit - wjhich actually works better. I can have the bass closer to my body as it sits farther away from the tripod. I'll post the pics when I get home from work tonite.
