Charlie uses his third (ring) finger quite a bit in the lower positions. I really like his playing and it seems to work for him.

Double Bass Ergo megathread part II

Be careful! You want to learn the upright bass right the first time, and not have to correct mistakes learned before. The Simandl book is the best I know of, that I used with my teacher. There is also a second Simandl book when you get to that level. Best of luck! I just love my Ergo 5!!
I'm studying Simandl, both books. Mentioned it several posts back in a thread that was started separately and mods merged it with this one. How do you deal with thumb position? Seems like it would be easier on an upright that has a body that can be used for leverage...

It is much easier, as there is no choice! When you come up to the body on the upright bass, you pull your thumb out from behind the neck and onto the strings, then use your first, second, and third fingers. On an Ergo, you can do this, or not. I feel it is better to use the same technique on an upright bass on an Ergo. Simandl is the way to go, and a teacher to watch you is preferred.
Yeah I'm definitely going to learn traditional DB technique. I'm finding it quite easy to catch on so far. Thanks for the advice man!
Hello fellow Ergo Bassist! I need a case for my Ergo 5, and am siding on making one out of pvc pipe. I plan on using capped ends, with fitted foam, and a hinged door. Here are my questions, What size diameter pipe works best? How do you seal the door so it is somewhat water proof, and what about the extra stuff, like the stand, quiver, bows, rosin, etc? I thought about a tandem system, for bass and accessories. Any ideas is greatly appreciated!
Another thought is to use a rifle case.. For a long rifle. Has anyone tried this? Also, I am having trouble finding a foam block, to cut to form the inside(either a pvc pipe or homemade wooden box). Thanks!

Most definitely! I just don't have the cash to spend on it. Ns also makes a strap that could work with minor mods, but it costs about the same as this case. I plan on making both, as soon as I figure out the best way to do so. That is a sweet case, and long enough! Long rifle cases look to work also, but around the same price.
Hey guys, here's the answer to the case dilemma that works for me. I think this case has been mentioned here.
I used a Plano Airliner 4588 telescoping fishing rod case. It's about $60 at Dick's Sporting Goods.
There is no padding, so I rolled my Ergo up like a burrito in a soft jersey sheet (the t-shirt type material) and put it in the case. The bass stays in tight with no bouncing around and the sheet is big enough to bunch up at the top and bottom of the bass so there is padding all around it. The whole thing weighs around 13.5 pounds on my bathroom scale with the bass loaded in it.
The case is extremely durable. Very stout, heavy plastic. Here it is all loaded up:

Snowboard case! I actually have one of those from when I snowboarded before the knees went.
It has been in the back of my mind to use it but I left it at my parent's rental place in the mountains and have yet to retrieve it.
The rifle case was my next go to. You'd think there is a nice sniper rifle case that would be long enough to cage the beast.
Ok a string question. Jesse is getting ready to ship my 5er Ergo and I have gotten ahold of a set of D orchestral lights E-G but the only B used B I could find was a orchestral Med. Is it bad to mix them or would it sound strange? I could order a new one if needed. Any string recommendations and should I play the strings that come on it first?
I just discovered on a short flight that my Ergo fits in the overhead bin just in a long bow case.
What's the average wait time for an Ergo? I'm strongly considering getting one, but like to know what kind of wait I might be in for. 
When I ordered mine Jesse said 6 weeks which is what others had said. With mine coming in next week it would be 10 weeks including a delay due to Jesse having surgery during the building of mine so I am very impressed with his build time.
