I used to be a short scale Hofner player, but play long scale now. I currently own an Alpine White Jack Casady, Pelham Blue Midtown Signature, and Ebony ES-335 Bass...seeing what popular opinion is out there between the three.hollow body thread and no Guild Starfire?
+1 on every point you madeI own an Epiphone Jack Casady. Sure, it has some quality issues (stock bridge, tuners and strings are prime candidates for replacement) but on balance it is very good value for money. And, most importantly, it sounds great. Very responsive and versatile, despite being only a single pickup.
Gibson ES-335's and Midtowns were/are super-rare and super-expensive in my part of the world. I was lucky enough to play both of them in a music store. The quality was very good, but IMO not high enough to justify the high price, so I was never really tempted to buy.
The type and locations of the pickups on the Midtown were always a bit of a problem for me - I guess they suit a certain style of playing and genre of music. I felt the type/location of pickups on the ES-335 were more versatile.
Overall, I would have no qualms about playing my JCB for almost any genre, and I would probably rock an ES-335 as well. But for old-fashioned rock and roll, I think the Midtown will either have limited versatility or I would spend too much time knob-tweaking to make it sound "right".
