I saw this live. The whole thing was great but the last 20-30 minutes blew my mind. She channeled something like few musicians I've ever experienced. Geri: Genius, Grace and Fire | Jazz 24/7
I've seen her twice with her own bands, once with Lovano and once in the trio with Carrington and Geri Allen (RIP). Her ability to kill in multiple styles reminds me of Stanley Clarke and John Pattitucci, then she sings really well, too. In every interview of her I have read she displays a cool head, she knows she has just started her journey. Check back in 2028 and then 2038 and see how she's doing.

There are some people who I enjoy very much as musicians but not as composers. We can be expressive via our instrument but not be able to translate the music in our head into a coherent result.
I'd like to hear Esperanza Spalding do a project with someone who can really write and is an explosive soloist like Hiromi Uehara (jazz pianist, check her Trio Project), and an uncoventional drummer like Annika Niles.

I think she's a very talented and gifted musician. Always glad to see versatile new artists emerge.

I give her credit for a lot... She's got a good team behind her. Marketing
to a genre filled with aging jazz veterans, and a public willing to lower the bar
for the right packaging.
Kinda like looking for the messiah... A jazz one, but still...
But, the jazz bible also warns against false prophets...
Her branding is fantastic. Textbook perfection...
But her material is like eating watermelon. Lots of watered down content, and you'll realize you're still hungry eventually... IMO.

Esperanza is awesome! An amazing talent and seems like a very cool person. I REALLY wish I had been able to catch her on that tour. One of my favorite albums of the past 5 years...

In fact, from a marketing perspective... Being a woman in any genre of music now is very marketable.
But, I personally don't care about that... I like my funk raw, and my musicians with frayed ends and attitude. I hate anything that is "polite."
And safe so we don't scare ... (ahem) folks...
I'd rather see the Prince of Darkness than the Princess of Polite. But, hey... She's talented. She's just
not my cup of tea, but we should support anyone getting by in the current climes.
This is exactly why I’d love to see her live. Pretty much everything I’ve heard about her live performances indicates that she’s amazing.
For the record (excuse the pun) I don't like her solo recordings very much -- they aren't really my thing and I find it hard to get into them (my fault, not hers). Then I saw her live playing with Teri Lynn Carrington and I was nearly in tears.
