Essential rackmounts

Best for what? Are you trying to build a rack for your personal use? What type of music? What are your sound goals? Since this is the effects forum, I assume you want to know what rack effects are best, right?

If you want to know about power conditioners, I suggest you search the amp forum. The general consensus is that they are not worth the money. I agree.

I play metal, and am getting a Mesa bass 400+, want to start a good rack. The head,A good equalizer, a good stereo compressor(one side in effects loop, other side infront of amp input), maybe a bbe or something better. I'd like bass friendly reverb/delay, I like to have a slightly dampened tone, makes the bass bigger and warmer IMO.

Want to know everything's essential must have rackmount.

The 400+ is a great place to start. I don't often think of tube amps as being clean, but I still think it is a great choice. Is there any reason why you want a rack effect? Do you not like pedal effects? Anyway for rack delay/reverb units that don't cost an arm and a leg, take a look at tc electronics. The M-One XL and D-Two are pretty good. If you've got a few thousand hanging around look at Lexicon and Eventide. Personally, I would look at getting a couple of good effect pedals. Iron Ether Nimbus is an awesome bass reverb. There are tons of really good delay pedals that work well on bass.

You won't need an equalizer, IMO. The EQ on my Mesa Bass 400+ is amazing, as is. Don't need anything extra. All I have is a power conditioner in the rack with it. Huge pedal board with my Zoom B3 for tuning.

You for sure want to leave a rack space open on top of the Mesa to give it some room to breath.

Thanks for the tip about the rack space man! I want more mids control, I'll experiment with it once I get it though. I hate 400hz-850hz. I like those heavily cut. It sits really tight in recordings I've done. What's I think the Mesa can do it good though! I hope I won't need an eq, but if I do I'll have ultimate control on the eq curve, and it will be more precise.

I think some lights are a good addition, added to the power conditioner works best for me. I'm sure when I get back home I'll be adding a rackmounted midi converter and compression, maybe EQ as well. I like tone control. Just depends on what you are into. I had thought about getting a drawer for my cables, and a fan in the back to cool off the gear just in case.

Everyone is different. Some like it simple, others like it complex. Best thing you can do is go to the music store, connect it with your system and try it out.
