Essex Ursa Neck Color

Looking at getting an SX P. I'm torn between the rosewood and maple 'boards.

I know the maple boards have gotten some hate in the past for the "mac n cheese" orange stains.

Are the Ursa's with the new headstocks still afflicted with toxic orange tint, or is the shade a more natural color now?

I ask because I've never owned a maple 'board before and I like the idea of having one, however if it's gonna be orange I can do a rosewood board just fine.

I think it varies bass to bass, i have had 3 SX's all with varing degrees of tint.

I haven't tried it, but it's apparently an easy and effecive way of removing the tint without harming the neck. It's a natural paint remover/solvent that only removes the top layer of the SX clear coat that contains the tint, leaving a untinted satin finished clear coat. In a lot of cases you won't even lose the SX decals on the headstock, though you will have to remove the stickers on the back of it.

Citristrip removes it very easily and doesn't hurt the neck at all. Just cake the stuff on and let it sit until you see it start bubbling up and scrape it off. I did mine in about an hour or so one night.

I have an old headstock P/J. If you're worried about the orangeness and/or don't feel comfortable using the citristrip, go rosewood.

It's a sunburst with black pickguard and a rosewood board.

The orangy tint actually compliments the burst VERY well, and since it's rosewood, it's not as overbearing as it could be.


I also have an old headstock SX guitar (jazzmaster copy) and the rosewood board on that also takes away from the orange-ness.
