Double Bass EUB for the Road

I'm currently in the market for an EUB. I've been searching all over the forums, but haven't quite seen my exact needs addressed.

In the next month or so I'm going to be buying my first upright. A real double bass, not an EUB. However, I'm also being asked by two touring acts that I play with, if I could have an upright for the road.

I'm not really interested in bringing a $3-4000+ fragile instrument like a DB on the road. So I figured I could try to find a good sounding EUB for around $1000 or less. I've read about the Palatino's, but it seems I'd need to do a lot of work to make it sound reasonable. I've also read about the Z Basses, but those are very difficult to find.

Any other ideas? Remember, it has to be able to take the abuse of the road. These are bus tours, so it's not like I'll be shoving it into a van, but I still don't want to take any chances.

Any help would be wonderful. Thanks in advance.

At that price point I definitely think you'll be best off looking for something used. I have seen dozens of decent quality "stick style" EUB's sell used for under 1K, and the odds of picking up a used hollow-body one that has already been tricked out and upgraded are pretty good if you keep your eyes peeled.

NS Designs WAV has an $800 street price or so, and aside from some finish issues is a damn fine instrument from what I've heard. This weekend I get to try one out in person, but from a price point alone it sounds like it fits the bill.
