Double Bass EUB shopping in NYC?

Do yourself a favor, contact Bill Merchant and see if he has a Vertical Bass available.

I gigged heavily on EUBs for years and that one blows all the others out of the water.

I agree most heartily. However, Bill no longer makes the Vertical basses. I asked. Got lucky and found a used one, but only because an acquaintance was selling his.

Not sure who would have Eminence or BSX...Kolstein has their version...forget what they call it, but it's a shorter scale. Finlay+Gage might, but it's a long shot. They didn't have them when they had the place on Walker St. (where the inventory of basses was considerable), and I doubt they'd have them in the new place (where the inventory of basses is not....) Of course, it never hurts to call and ask.

I haven't played on an Eminence in about 20 years, so I can't help you in that department, but I've never heard an EUB sound as good as a V-Bass. One drummer in particular I played with said "That thing sounds good! And they usually don't...." And it's not as much of a mind-shag playing one compared to a regular bass as I had expected.

Thanks! - The vertical bass is still on his website. I emailed Bill to see if he has one.

That site is really out of date. He gave up his shop in the city a couple years ago and just works up in High Falls now, which is in Ulster Co., and not close.... just warning you ;).

I owned both at the same time. The Eminence is a lousy-sounding toy by comparison. The Vertical Bass looks crude, but mimics the sound and feel of a real bass shockingly well.
Oh No! I thought the Eminence was a quality bass. The price sure would leave me thinking so. I was leaning towards the Eminence beacuse the one time I heard one live it sounded similar to an upright. The Yamaha and NS designs "stick basses" sound to much like a bass guitar. The BSX might be an option? Bummer that the Verticle basses are no more, but I can hunt for a used one I guess.
