Double Bass EUBs in Australia

Recently I was in the UK on a holiday and i saw an EUB and quite liked the idea of it, and since I've come home I have been looking into getting one.

Does anyone know what kind of EUB would be suitable for an Intermediate Acoustic Double Bassist looking to try an EUB and do you know where is a good place to get one from (or anywhere that has a range of EUBs to look at) in Australia?

The best ones Ive seen are the NS design CR4/CR5 (not the cheap wav4), and the yamaha silent bass.

I wasnt impressed with the palatino/riley bass. Havent tried the eminence.

If you want to go for the good brand name EUBs then its almost always cheaper to buy from the US. I bought a near new CR5M off a friend who ordered it from lemurmusic I believe.

I know 2 people that use them, one of them my mentor who had a custom one made with all solid wood (not sure if the standard ones use plywood)

They both love them but to me both the custom and the standard one sounded like a cheapish ply or hybrid bass which is amped.

Whatever you try, dont compare them in terms of double bass tone. Just pick an instrument that really speaks to you tone wise, and has a lot of expressive range.

Thanks for that.

I was just wondering if you were able to shed any light on the difference between the Stagg and Aria EDBs? And if you know of anywhere in Australia you can get them or if, as you said, it is just easier to get them shipped from over seas?

I dunno re the Stagg EUB's & palatino's/Riley EUB's are pretty cruddy. I bought one of these a few yrs ago, & after doing the mods the ppl in the PALATINO megathread suggested, I get a pretty good sound outta it.
BUT there are more choices out here now & I'd DEF. look into the cheaper NS, Stagg or DEAN brands.
The Riley(as it's marketed @ The Bass Shop in Sydney) can be made to sound good- MY mods:- New Bridge(made by a TB member), new String retainer- I made this meself outta steel rope(after a 'real' one I bought from a specialist Dbl bass shop broke 1st time I tried it), D'addario Hybrid Strings, 'inner-tube' rubber under the piezo p-up & under bridge feet. All up(w/out the strings) costs were about $50 & 90% of that was the bridge. All I wanna do now is rip out the stock pre-amp & run it into one of my own.

Billy Hyde music in Camperdown/Annandale do a couple of EUB's. They have the NS and Stagg models, also The Bass Centre in Victoria list a few on their site and can very easily ship one to you, its all a matter of preference.
