EV RE320

So I was able to score a pretty much new RE320 for $150 in a pawn shop. I'm looking at using it on kick drum or low brass and sax or bass cabs if those situations arise, but mainly on kick. Does anyone have any thoughts on this mic's performance or tips on placement or applications for it. Currently I alternate between a Sennheiser MD-421-U5 and an AKG D112 for kick. I have always liked the 421, but this opportunity to pick up this mic I've heard good stuff about at a good price so I took it. Any feedback (no pun intended) would be appreciated. Thanks!

You've already had some experience with two great kick drum mics. I would recommend starting off with the mic placement that you usually use with the others to see how the RE320 compares. You may find that's the sound you like. If not, start experimenting.

Thanks. The 91a is another I've wanted to add, but finances don't allow it right now. I can't afford to buy new and I just happened across this deal. This mic doesn't look like its ever been used at all. The mic clip still even had the European thread insert still in it. I can't think of the last time I saw a stand like that around here. It just looks brand new. I will be putting it through its paces this weekend. I often use the 421 eq'd for low end punch on the front of the kick and pair it with an SM57 about 3 inches to the side of the beater eq'd for the high end snap of the attack. I find that blending these two mics like that helps get the low end that you feel in your chest but also lets me get the attack that makes the kick SOUND stand out in the mix. Since the 320 is so much longer and can go further into the port on the resonant head, do you think it would be a decent repro of the 2 mic setup I sometimes use? Thanks for your feedback!

Not exactly. While the 421 is a great mic in it's own right, I think there are much better choices for kick. That 320 on it's own with that large diaphragm, just sounds so good. It does thick just about better than anything. Experiment with positioning. It will give you some nice sonic choices. You'll know when it hits the sweet spot.
Now take that 421 and throw it on the rack toms!! That also is a match made in heaven. (that is until the first few whacks with a stick makes you cringe :D)

It's a 421-U5. I love that mic, but I already have another one that was destroyed by a drummer. It's a vintage mic and Sennheiser doesn't repair the U5 anymore. It's also very different than the 421-II. I'd hate to have anything happen to that mic
