I've got both here, but the mittels are on a much more expressive bass than the weich, so I really can't compare tone fairly.

I'm getting a very nice percussive pop on the front of notes with the mittels (pizz) that I'm not getting with the weichs, but again, the bass with the mittels is much nicer than the weich bass.

I've been reasonably happy with Obligatos for all round arco and pizz playing but they are hard work for occasional slapping. I've been meaning to try some Obligato or Dominant solo strings for some time but I now see that the Evah Pirazzi are available in soft (Weich?) and solo. As usual the Pirastro website descriptions are not a lot of help.

Has anyone here tried these strings? Can you describe the difference between EP Soft Orchestra and EP Medium Solo?

don't know for the other gauges, but i have now a D and G EP solo on my bass, and they're, for me , similar to obligato solo in tension. Sound if more deep howewer, and slap quite easy and soft sounding, due to their very short sustain... hope its helps..

I tried the solos at orchestra tuning and found them to be nice and clear sounding with good sustain pizz. In orchestra tuning, the A string felt somewhat tighter than the D and G strings. I have not tried the E (F#) string.

Comparing them to the weich gauge EPs, they are softer under the fingers with less tension, a bit less ping on the front of the note pizz, and somehow, seem clearer sounding, maybe I'm hearing more highs with them. I don't know how you would find them for slapping.

I was curious about the solo Evahs at standard tuning. I was using Oligatos (just 1st and 2nd string) at standard tuning sometimes and I liked them. I had written to Pirastro about using Evah solo strings at standard tuning and they tried to talk me out of it. I love the Evah weichs so if they retain most of that sound I may spring for them.

I just swapped the Spiro Weichs on my Romanian flatback for a set of Evah Weichs, and I immediately noticed that they're much easier to bow- but the G has a very nasal sound compared to the other strings. I first noticed that there was a buzzing sound coming from where I fingered the string, but I get that nasal sound even on the open string and harmonics. Has anyone else noticed this? I tried raising the bridge a bit but it didn't make a difference.

Nope, never noticed that with the Evah mittels or weichs. On my bass, the sets were very well balanced. I have played the weichs (and mittels, IIRC) on a numebr of other basses and found them to be nicely balanced on those as well.

Ah, I see. Hmm... don't play much arco these days but actually had a classical gig a while back on the Evahs. Pretty balanced for arco on my bass.

The nasal quality on the regular EP G string is what led me to skip it on the Weichs and stick with the Oliv.

Great balance.

Well I've had a set of EP solos, tuned E,A,D,G, on for just over a week and so far so good. They sounded fine straight on the bass, pizz, arco or slap.

To begin with, the tension seemed higher on the thinner strings. However, the lower strings needed to be tightened up more over the first few days. Now the tension seems more even.

Having tried lots of different strings, admittedly mostly used, I've decided I prefer non-steel core, non-nylon covered strings for my all-round use. Of course I'd prefer to have a house full of basses but that's not going to happen :) . So I'm definitely an Obligato, Dominant or EP man and shall restrict my quest for the optimum bass/string combination to these.

I just put a set of Evah Pirazzis on my Kai Arvi. On the whole, I really like these strings: my bass sounds monstrous when I play a 'G' on the E string.

But my D is getting me down: it's really prone to rolling, which seems to prevent the bow from grabbing it properly. Is it possible that I got a dud? Are D's usually a little wonky? Do I need to give it some more time to play in?
