Final follow-up. I have concerts this weekend, so I ordered a replacement D from Lemur as well. It arrived today and I swapped it for the dud: much, much better. I haven't played it much yet, but the roll is gone.

I'd like to hear stories and opinions on when about when Evah Regulars die out.
How long did they last, what were they like towards the end etc.

Mine have been on about six months, and just recently they changed for the better. They are looser and easier to play, and the tone is more complex. Cool,eh? Just how long this will last is the question.
I just got home from a gig - mostly slab (about 70%) but the band I was playing with does some country tunes sometimes, depending on the room.
Man, they just plain killed tonight. I was playing relatively loud, through my Ashdown rig with both 4x10s. I was expecting feedback city, but I thought it would be worth a shot to pull it out - I used it for more than half of our first set. (Before the club management nicely asked us to stick to more Top40/Rock tunes for the rest of the night).
I didn't have to tweak too much to find the frequency that was going to feed back - the room sounds good, so that was a bonus.
Man, they really made the night. This is nothing that hasn't been said in this thread (or the other one....there was another one too right?) but they've got that woody, warm thing that just punches through a band like where guts would sit...but with enough top-end and sustain that it wasn't all low-end oomph. That pop at the front end playing pizz was picked up nicely by the pickup. Slap sounded HUUUUGE. Pizz wasn't muddy or overly tubby at all. Kinda made me sad to have to finish the night on the electric.
The sound I had dialed in tonight would work real well with a Big Band.
Speaking of - I played a gig with my Big Band on Wed with just a mic (ATM650) clipped on to the bass-side f-hole - pointed pretty much right in between the rib and where the bass bar is. Straight into the pa. Not the first location I would think of pointing it, but I tried it on a gig last year on a whim and it worked out then (can't remember if that was with Spiros, or Superflexibles maybe)... Sounded great with the Evahs.

I'm guessing the fact that it's hyper-cardioid adds to the feedback resistance, although I can't say how much for sure. EDIT: Okay, I just googled the ATM350 - I understand now why you were asking! I use a cheapo drum mic clip that I've slightly modified (ie bent) to angle a dynamic mic properly. I usually use it on the outer edge of an f-hole (don't do this on a carved top!) - it gives me a couple of different locations to work with on either side. It's not as hi-fi as a condenser would be, but it's a great workhorse live, and I've gotten some really good recorded sounds blending it with my K&K pickup.

You are so right about the percussive effect on the front end of the pizz notes. The EPs' DO take a long time to stretch out though so don't put them on the night before a gig. BTW, you guys use AMPS? Why? I play in a 25 piece big band with no amp and friends on the dance floor say the bass line comes through just fine. I suppose if you play while backing three or four amplified guitars and a trap set you would need to amplify also, but I am 70% symphonic, 10% combo and 20% big band and have had no need to amplify. If I recall correctly, none of the big bands of the 30's and 40's used amplification on anyone but the singer. Could be a personal thing, but I enjoy playing in groups who don't need to plug in.

Man. I did a session in my home studio yesterday for a new Rosemary Clooney show I'm playing and the recorded sound of the Evah orchestras was killin! I love the upfront attack but still really nice growl. [Invalid or Expired Link Removed].

I've had them on for about a month. Maybe a little more. I think I put them right around the beginning of Nov.
I think they are great on stage. The upfront attack really makes that 'punch in the gut' thing that I go for even better. They are also very responsive to how hard you pull. They really respond to changes in attack force and you get more of the click as you pull harder which helps it cut in the mix. I've found though that you can get a huge round sound with minimal effort.

Dang. That's exactly how a bass is supposed to sound.
They didn't do that for me last time I tried them on the queen. Didn't at all on the Cleveland. Huh. Maybe I should try them again post surgery now that things are more better.

Do Evah Pirazzzi strings have a shelf? Is there any harm in not having them on my bass? I hope not, since they are supposed to be impervious to climate change...thanks. I've been wanting to ask that for a while.

For me, on my bass, my playing, and my preferences (even if I hadn't injured my hand), I'd never go back to the orchestras-- the weichs seemed to have the advantages of the orchestras and were more playable. I can't recall from all these threads-- have you tried the weichs, Marc? Again, great sound-- thanks!

sorry, silly mood, and not even had a sip of alcohol today....
i've got Evah's on my new bass (came with the package) but not really sure if I like them...the G string does not sound very pleasing to me... too much ring, too bright (on my bass either way)...I think I'll put on Obligato's when the Evah's are worn out....

Both the orch's and weichs have green wrapping at the tailpiece, they differ in the colors at the other end. Evahs too bright?

could have something to do with the set up of the bass... but really don't like the G-string... the other ones i like very much, just not that one....can you tell by this picture which type they are?
