Double Bass Evah Pirazzi strings megathread part II

More bang on the bottom than the regular Evahs? I can see this is gonna scramble my brain. For now, I'm lovin' the regular Evahs but gee to think that the Weichs could be better...

I saw that one coming, Bri. I guess I should have waited until I had a gig on them. They seem really nicely balanced right outta the gate. I'll need to play them on the job before I can say much more. The character of the whole set is similar to the original EPs.... but the growl and punch on my bass is a little more aggressive. The G seems like it retains that nice fullness from the other set.

6.) The bass is just shaking the room on the low end. Like Animas did, but more focused and centered. I need to go back and play some more to confirm this, but my bass seems to really like these strings down low. Noticably more bang on the bottom than the first set.

Oh, man! I just love that low bottom clarity that the regular Evah's have!

Good point. That caveat means they only work well on a small patch of land with perfect weather in the middle of nowhere.

Way too early to go beyond that. AFAIK, they aren't on the market yet anyway, so hold onto y'all's wallets.

Okay, they're on. I played them all of thirty minutes and jotted down some initial impressions; remember to add "on Marcus' bass" after every sentence after #1.
...

2.) I didn't measure anything, but the diameter seems about equal to that of Spiro Mittels. The tension reminds me a little bit of Animas...maybe a tad stiffer.

3.) They play great right out of the package... stability and feel are nice. No twang at all.

4.) The pizz sound has nice grain, like good mustard. I can't tell yet if that little "pop" is there... that took awhile to develop on my earlier set of EPs.

Hey Marcus, thanks for doing the review. But what is "weich" (= German for "soft") about these "Weichs"? Can you go into that a bit? How do these new EPs differ from the regulars? If the gauge is about like Spiro Mittels, they would be at least as fat as the regular EPs in gauge, if not fatter.

Do they, on your bass in Hawaii , still have more growl than regular EPs? I just put a new set of EPs on 3 months ago and the A and E had plenty of growl... Not to jump ahead, allowing for the settling in time they need, for the the pop on the note front, etc. just what CAN be said iro "weich"? Are they more flexible, less stiff, easier to dig in with, more finger articulations, than the regular EPs? Where's the beef?

I checked some of the posts here in TB, and here's what i got:

A = .089
D = .070
G = .059

So, if these measures are correct, then Evahs vs. Spiros are:

G: +0.007
D: 0.000
A: +0.004
E: -0.001

On average then, Evahs are larger, just as bribass said. They sure feel that way-- especially on the G where the difference really is the largest. So, if the gage of the Weichs is about like Spiros, they'd be, overall, smaller than the regular EPs (smaller on the G and A, even on the D, a tiny bit larger on the E).
