Double Bass Evah Pirazzi strings megathread part II

After patiently reading all 1000+ entries on this thread, I bought a set of Evah's a couple of weeks ago, excitedly put them on my nice carved bass, and was amazed at how bad they sounded- completely choked the volume, voice, and sustain of the bass.

I took them off the next day and put them on my beat up old Kay, and it sounded fantastic...the balance between the Evah A and gut D was great.

Back to the string search for the other bass....

I'll take this as yet another in a long line of examples that only generalities are useful about strings. So much depends on the interaction of the bass, the strings, the setup, and the player. I have Evahs on a "nice carved bass" and they are absolute cannons. HUGE projection and volume. YMMV!

Same here. But it took a couple of weeks for things to get that way on my bass. Initially I thought they muted my bass, but now she is singing quite nicely. However, I think the G-string bowed in upper registers is a bit "one-dimensional", which is a sentiment that other players have already noted.

Well, arco is such a small part of what I do these days that that wouldn't be an issue for me.

Okay, they're on. I played them all of thirty minutes and jotted down some initial impressions; remember to add "on Marcus' bass" after every sentence after #1.

1.) Thanks Adrian... you da man.

2.) I didn't measure anything, but the diameter seems about equal to that of Spiro Mittels. The tension reminds me a little bit of Animas...maybe a tad stiffer.

3.) They play great right out of the package... stability and feel are nice. No twang at all.

4.) The pizz sound has nice grain, like good mustard. I can't tell yet if that little "pop" is there... that took awhile to develop on my earlier set of EPs.

5.) They seem more growly than the regular EPs did.... especially on the E & A, which leads me to..

6.) The bass is just shaking the room on the low end. Like Animas did, but more focused and centered. I need to go back and play some more to confirm this, but my bass seems to really like these strings down low. Noticably more bang on the bottom than the first set.

7.) Arco is pretty similar to the earlier EP set. Full and complex. I need to do this some more too, but I just flew home and my arms are tired.

Promising so far, more later. I'm off tonight, gigging tomorrow.

Aw man. I just got off this merry go round. Now I'm putting guts back on my back up bass (and digging the heck out of it) and I'm thinking this (EP Weichs) might be worth trying with the main bass. I can just tell it's going to be another $1000 buck shot before ending up with Mittels again.

Man, you guys are some sick puppies. I'm with the anthem singers on this one - I've had the same set of strings on for 3 years and I like it that way. Kind of reminds me of when I started shaving my hair off. It might not be pretty, but it's sure one less thing to worry about each day.

That said: No sound clips, no new strings. :D

Hmm.... sound clips. Lemee see what I can do this week. I have to borrow the technology, Luddite that I am.

It's worth mentioning that I dug the original EPs a lot... so I might have a bias. I don't think they would be everyone's cuppa tea... but like the earlier ones, they come really close to the sound in my head. To put it another way... I didn't scrunch my face up with disgust when I first played them. I could definitely live with them, playing them cold. I don't feel like I need to get to know them before I'd be cool onstage with them.

Way too early to go beyond that. AFAIK, they aren't on the market yet anyway, so hold onto y'all's wallets.

I saw that one coming, Bri.;) I guess I should have waited until I had a gig on them. They seem really nicely balanced right outta the gate. I'll need to play them on the job before I can say much more. The character of the whole set is similar to the original EPs.... but the growl and punch on my bass is a little more aggressive. The G seems like it retains that nice fullness from the other set.

I think it's hard to rate a G string until you've worked it over for awhile. :hmm:
