You're right, it was Jeremy. D'oh! He musta had on a Hawaiian shirt the last time I saw him. Or a grass skirt. Or both.
the pirastro guy that i was emailing said that the solos tuned to orchestra pitch would be very similar to the weichs in tension but completely different in characteristics.
I was just gonna say that. I'd been hoping they would come out with a solo set for a while. I liked the original Evah's but thought they were too high tension. But now they've got weich too? This could get costly!
The new development "Weich" is designed for those players who like the "Standard" orchestra set but would also like to have a reduced string tension and a very easy playability. This "Weich" set has a pronounced core sound and compared to the "Standard" orchestra set the sound is brighter and growlier with a little more sustain.
The construction/design is based on the "Standard" orchestra set.
String tension (for 106cm mensur) of the double bass Evah Pirazzi orchestra "Weich" set is about 10% lower compared to the double bass Evah Pirazzi orchestra "Standard" set.

That description sounds perfectly aligned with what I'm experiencing. The little 'pop' on the front of the note is beginning to become a little more prominent with each session.

I'm pretty sure Quinn Violins show the Evah weichs as in stock. I'm really curious. I'm not sure whether to buy a whole set or just the G & D. Right now I'm using Obligato G & D with spirocore weich A and Mittel E.

I received a test set of Weichs (Thanks Adrian!) . Here are some thoughts I passed on to Adrian-
"I should mention that I have in the past used Spirocore ( mittels) and Kolstein Heritage strings on my carved Wilfer bass. .
I liked the Spiro strings for pizz but not arco. I switched to the Kolstein which I liked for the lighter tension , and sound under the bow . I was intrigued by what I had read about the Evah strings but was concerned about the heavier tension , thus my interest in the Evah Weichs.
I must first say that my initial impressions of the strings are very positive . Right out of the box the workmanship and construction quality of the strings, look and feel great.
The strings took 4-5 or 5 days to hold pitch ,much like the Kolsteins , but now hold pitch very well. I found the tension to somewhere between the Spiros ( medium ) and the Kolsteins (Very soft). Over all, very comfortable under the fingers.

Sonically the strings have a nice warmth . They are darker than both other sets of strings, and a nice match for my Wilfer which is a bit on the bright side.
The strings pizz- wise are great with a warm ,yet clear tone (notes have a good centered pitch) . Arco also play very nicely .
The biggest change I found with the Evahs is hearing the strength of the fundamental in the notes . This makes for a bigger and stronger voice on my bass. Overall I found the strings nicely matched except, the E string was slightly quieter (on my bass) .
I guess the last thing I'll be interested in finding out is how long the strings last. It seems the regular Evahs are by all reports are holding up very well, which I would think would bode well for the the Weichs."
I love these strings more each day . They have settled in very nicely. Arco -sounds very rich and start easily . Pizz -has a nice compromise /mixture of some growl and some thump. Best elements of old and new school tone IMHO.
Of course- all above is IMO and YMMV yada yada..

i just ordered weich g, d and A with a regular E...

I really like the Weich E. It has the same big fundamental as the regular one, with more growl.
This is very interesting. I'm really enjoying the regular Evah Pirazzi strings after about 1 month of use, however I would like some less tension, particularily in the G string but also the D. Are these strings also thinner in guage? If so, how much thinner?
All the info on tension/flexibility/stiffness is helpful. Can anyone tell me how they feel compared to flatchrome steels, spiro weichs, or obligatos. FCS works best for me, the tension seems low, I need this due to a bum left arm. even spiro weichs can be a little heavy for me, but sometimes I can use them for a while, I would prefer that tension if my arm ever gets stronger again. Obligato seem fine under the left hand, but a little sloppy under the right. Thickness gauge & actual lbs of tenison are not as important to me as how the actually feel on the bass. Sometimes flexibility trumps tension with me. Any thoughts? Thanks
To any one who has gone from standard (Medium) to Weich EPs: would tuning down a half step give a good approximation of the tension difference?
I've been waiting in the wings on this one. I've had a test set on for 2 weeks. I really like them. I came from a mixed set of Anima's on G and D and Sprio's on E and A. The tension is great. A little tighter than Anima's (I wanted that). MUCH easier to bow. I have used a wide variety of amping methods as well. Last night I played a Jazz Fest with a mic going to house and amp on stage. Worked great. Through amps alone it is also great. Brighter than the regular EP set. The tension on my bass is in between weich's and anima's. The wrap is smooth and reminds me of Oliv's a bit. I have not lost any acoustic volume either. I like the Anima's as I was able to do many gis w/out an amp. I have been able to keep the same idea with the EP weich's. The comments from band members has also been positive. I did 2 bass master classes and 1 rhythm section class as part of the festival and at every class I had the "what strings do you use?" question. My bass is a little bright so I've had to always tone down the G and D from steels to get the sound I like. These work like a charm. Out of all the hybrid strings I like these the best. Hybrids being obligato, EP regulars, Innovation H, Anima, dominant, and Oliv. I still love my Oliv G and may slap it on soon to see how they would blend together. Tension wise, I think it would be perfect. The only reason I would swap them out would be to get that rich full sound up in thumb position (especially pizz). This is a very minor aspect however.
