ES: "My name is Eric and I'm a string addict."

Group: "Hello Eric."

ES:"It's been six months, one week, and two days since I've changed strings."

Group: "Welcome Eric!"

Leader:"Who is your sponsor Eric?"

ES:"His name is Phil."

Leader:"Would anyone like to speak? How about you, Troy? No? Marcus?"

[phil speaks]

I can't seem to stop staring at my string box.

I sit there and salivate.

I still have a fresh set of Animas sitting, patiently waiting for me.

And all those dormant gut strings...Gamuts, Red o Rays...uggh. They look so sad.

And look at all the pretty Flexocors. And this set of Original Flatchromes...Ohh and these FlatChromesteels I stole from Brian.

Ahh HA HA....Stringssss Stringsss, Stringsss.....Ahhh HA HA.....

Thank you.

SA handbook said:
Who is an addict?

Most of us do not have to think twice about this question. We know! Our whole life and thinking was centered in strings in one form or another—the getting and using and finding ways and means to get more. We lived to use and used to live. Very simply, an addict is a man or woman whose life is controlled by strings. We are people in the grip of a continuing and progressive illness whose ends are always the same: jails, institutions, and death.

What is the Stringoholics Anonymous program?

SA is a nonprofit fellowship or society of men and women for whom strings had become a major problem. We are recovering addicts who meet regularly to help each other stay clean. This is a program of complete abstinence from all new strings. There is only one requirement for membership, the desire to stop using. We suggest that you keep an open mind and give yourself a break. Our program is a set of principles written so simply that we can follow them in our daily lives. The most important thing about them is that they work.

There are no strings attached to SA. We are not affiliated with any other organizations, we have no initiation fees or dues, no pledges to sign, no promises to make to anyone. We are not connected with any political, religious, or law enforcement groups, and are under no surveillance at any time. Anyone may join us, regardless of age, race, sexual identity, creed, religion, or lack of religion.

We are not interested in what or how much you used or who your connections were, what you have done in the past, how much or how little you have, but only in what you want to do about your problem and how we can help. The newcomer is the most important person at any meeting, because we can only keep what we have by giving it away. We have learned from our group experience that those who keep coming to our meetings regularly stay clean.

Why are we here?

Before coming to the Fellowship of SA, we could not manage our own lives. We could not live and enjoy life as other people do. We had to have something different and we thought we had found it in strings. We placed their use ahead of the welfare of our families, our wives, husbands, and our children. We had to have strings at all costs. We did many people great harm, but most of all we harmed ourselves. Through our inability to accept personal responsibilities we were actually creating our own problems. We seemed to be incapable of facing life on its own terms.

Most of us realized that in our addiction we were slowly committing suicide, but addiction is such a cunning enemy of life that we had lost the power to do anything about it. Many of us ended up in jail, or sought help through medicine, religion, and psychiatry. None of these methods was sufficient for us. Our disease always resurfaced or continued to progress until, in desperation, we sought help from each other in Strinoholics Anonymous.

After coming to SA we realized we were sick people. We suffered from a disease from which there is no known cure. It can, however, be arrested at some point, and recovery is then possible.

How it works

If you want what we have to offer, and are willing to make the effort to get it, then you are ready to take certain steps. These are the principles that made our recovery possible.

We admitted that we were powerless over our addiction, that our lives had become unmanageable.

We came to believe that a Power greater than ourselves could restore us to sanity.

We made a decision to turn our will and our lives over to the care of God as we understood Him.

We made a searching and fearless moral inventory of ourselves.

We admitted to God, to ourselves, and to another human being the exact nature of our wrongs.

We were entirely ready to have God remove all these defects of character.

We humbly asked Him to remove our shortcomings.

We made a list of all persons we had harmed, and became willing to make amends to them all.

We made direct amends to such people wherever possible, except when to do so would injure them or others.

We continued to take personal inventory and when we were wrong promptly admitted it.

We sought through prayer and meditation to improve our conscious contact with God as we understood Him, praying only for knowledge of His will for us and the power to carry that out.

Having had a spiritual awakening as a result of these steps, we tried to carry this message to addicts, and to practice these principles in all our affairs.

This sounds like a big order, and we can’t do it all at once. We didn’t become addicted in one day, so remember—easy does it.

There is one thing more than anything else that will defeat us in our recovery; this is an attitude of indifference or intolerance toward spiritual principles. Three of these that are indispensable are honesty, open-mindedness, and willingness. With these we are well on our way.

We feel that our approach to the disease of addiction is completely realistic, for the therapeutic value of one addict helping another is without parallel. We feel that our way is practical, for one addict can best understand and help another addict. We believe that the sooner we face our problems within our society, in everyday living, just that much faster do we become acceptable, responsible, and productive members of that society.

The only way to keep from returning to active addiction is not to buy that first string. If you are like us you know that one is too many and a thousand never enough. We put great emphasis on this, for we know that when we use drugs in any form, or substitute one for another, we release our addiction all over again.

Thinking of spirocores as different from other strings has caused a great many addicts to relapse. Before we came to SA, many of us viewed spirocores separately, but we cannot afford to be confused about this. Spirocores are strings. We are people with the disease of addiction who must abstain from all strings in order to recover.

Play the next right string. One string at a time, people. Keep coming back...it works!

ES: My name is Eric and I'm...a...string...addict.

All: Hi Eric.

ES: I've been spending time in my own head, you know, practicing.

All: Chuckles, snorts, shuffling, various noises

ES: My Disease has been telling me that my strings cause my poor arco articulation. I think about it all the time. I think about how all the other players sound better; I can't stop The Voice. The more I practice the worse I sound, and feel.

I started pulling out the old strings last night and playing "mix and match", again. Reviewing strings I have tried over and over.

You know; straightening out bent string ends. Poking myself on damaged windings. I can feel myself both relaxing and getting excited when I get the the puncture wounds.

Now the Evah Weichs are out. Marcus says they're good; they must be good. I think that, finally, these could be my perfect string.

I have quit calling my string sponser. All he ever uses anyway are Spiros. All he talks about is relaxing my arm movements. He doesn't understand me and my unique situation.

I haven't been to a SA meeting for about two weeks. There was this really cute newcomer at the last meeting I went to. Maybe I should go to that one again...

Um, thanks for letting me share.

All: Keep coming back.

Hey man.... it's Adrian's fault. The first set was free. :hmm:

In all seriousness though... these EP Weichs could really become my "go to" strings. They've addressed the things that bugged me about both EP Mediums and Spirocores. If they don't crap out quickly, I should be good for awhile.

You're not ****ing helping Marcus...:scowl:

Now I have to explain to my wife why I am buying another set of strings, when I told her yesterday that I am very happy with the actual combination I have. :help:
Nah. Just take out another credit card that she doesnt know about and have them sent to another address like work or a friend. Put them on somewhere else and she'll never know.

right.....

easy right.....

no problem here right......

Why are my hands shaking?

You guys know how it works... if your basses sound good now, just leave it alone. I had Spiro Weichs on the bass when the EP Weichs came out, and I was happy with them. If Adrian hadn't sent me a test set of Evah Weichs, maybe I wouldn't have ordered them, just to save a few bucks. But now I've played them, and they really do everything I need them to. YMMV as always. I dig 'em.

you know a key part of bass-player-sig-other training is the session on recognizing winding colors ... or, worse yet, velvet syndrome: "why is that string a different color now?"

welcome to the dog house.

Why are my hands shaking?

I just put on a set yesterday. My initial impressions are similar to what people have said so far. They feel great under the left hand - supple but not flabby. Pizzed they have a really nice fundamental, plenty of sustain, and a mellow growl. They sing well up in TP. They respond easily to the bow with no scratch or raspiness.

They are still a crossover string, so there are compromises on both sides. However, more people might be able to live with these compromises than with other strings. If you are looking for an aggressive steel string pizz vibe, I don't think they fit that bill. In my brief attempts at spiccato, I found that the lack of stiffness was a drawback. There is always a tradeoff, but again for a dual purpose string this might be the one for lots of folks.

On my bass (carved 7/8 Gagnon) I seem to have problems with the D string not matching. Most Pirastro Ds are dull and thuddy, including the Evah, while the Thomastic Ds are too bright, raspy, and nasally. I have ordered a few other Ds to experiment with. Might seem weird having the oddball string in the middle, but if it works it works.

I am probably doomed to a life of mix-and-match for what I like. I could see the Evah weichs in some killer combinations, like 3 WEPs under an Oliv G, or 3 Jazzers or Spiros under an Evah weich G (at least on my bass).

I should be able to get some sound clips up middle of next week, and I will add any other thoughts as I play these more.
