Double Bass Evah Pirazzi strings megathread part II

My situation now, I'm pretty happy with the spiro weichs but now I have a set of the EP weichs... Of course I'll put them on. Here I go again!
try bobs house of basses. he says he has them in stock now. i'm sure quinn & all the other good dealers that we like will have them soon.
So, a little over a month now. They've settled in nicely. The one word that describes them is "balanced". They do that thing that I like in my bass, amps, etc; they vanish. They're transparent. I'm never really aware of things like "Oh, these are Spiros, those are Animas". When I play on them, the link from brain to hands to execution is pretty seamless.
Someone, I think it was DURLLLL, said something in some thread about automatically ordering one gauge up for the E string in any given set. That works well for Spiros. I wouldn't recommend it with Evahs. The reason is that the character of the Weichs is significantly different... so, unless you want an "old school" thump on the E along with the more modern growl of the rest of the set, I think it's best to install them all. Balance. They don't sacrifice anything in volume on my bass.

Now I just need to scrounge up the scrap, and I'll too be putting some EP Weichs on my bass! My bass started out with some D'Addario Helicore Pizz, then I put on some Spirocore Weichs which were a great improvement, and I just can't wait for the EP Weichs!

Hi Marcus, just out of curiosity, where do you keep your action? I tried the EP normal guage G-string on my bass and while it sounded nice (perhaps a little too much sustain) it was too stiff for my taste and I could not raise the height up to where i wanted it. I replaced it with a Oliv G and tensionwise it's right where I want it. How do you think the tension of the EP weich D-string would match with the Oliv G?
I'm thinking they should be fairly similair?
For now I'm keeping the regular EPs on E and A. The A-string is just really great IMHO.
My string height, from G to E, ranges from 7-10mm. From my memory of the Oliv G on the same bass, I think the tension would be a good match. However, if you experienced too much sustain with the regular gauge Evah, you may not like the Weich D in that capacity. On my bass, there is noticeably more sustain and growl with the EP Weichs. They do seem to have tamed down a bit in the month I've played them.

hopefully i'll have these in a few days.
i'm switching spiro mittel out for these.
looking for a little more fundamental and less overtones. i like the thick dark, organic sounding growl.
also a little less tension (and hopefully i'll gain a mm or two of string height) and i prefer a bigger string.
i'll let you know my impressions when i get them on and they settle for a few days.

I hate you guys. I've been conciously ignoring this thread for weeks, but I caved. Hey jimpwonka, any chance we can meet up in Austin so I can check these things out? I hate myself...

For some reason I like a bit of growl on the lower strings but on the G-string my bass sounds like a fretless slab with most steel and synthetic-strings, thus I'm trying Oliv for the moment. With the weich D I'm hoping to raise the action a bit to be able to get more out of the Oliv G.
Anxious for that D to ship here....
It should be okay.... as I said, the growl tamed down a bit, so now I have a nice organic, warm sound. If you wanted a little more growl on the A & E, you could always add the Evah Weichs there later.
As an option, I had Olivs on the G and the D, which worked very well on my bass. More pricey, though.

Are still studying at KMH this autumn or is this your last year? I would love to try this setup of yours.
I just played 2 gigs with my new EP Weichs and my first impressions are very favorable. They do remind me of the regulars in tone, but as has been said, they have more growl on the E and A strings. They are also quite a bit looser feeling on my bass, which I like. They sound dark and wonderful jazz pizz when playing alone or soloing with light accompianment, they do tend to disappear in the mix to my ear when playing in the band. I've been tweaking the eq on my amp to the higher side to see if this helps and I think it does. They sound nice under the bow, but the feel is a bit spongy and will require a lighter touch, I think. All in all, I'm getting a nice, dark punchy pizz sound with them and they are quite enjoyable. I'll report back after working with them some more.

Since I'm the thread starter here, I'd like to try to sum up the Evah Weich thing. Some of you have pm'ed me, and that's fine, I enjoy talking to you. I guess there will be people waiting for these strings, as I did with the originals.
Like any "hybrid" string, the Evah Pirazzi Weichs seem to try to do a lot of things well, and some things not as well as strings that are designed to perform a specific musical task. They are probably a bit soft for aggressive arco, although I think that one could adapt to them. For me, they come closer to doing everything than any string that I can think of. I mentioned their balance and neutrality before, and that's probably my favorite aspect of them. Any given note on my bass sounds equal to any other note, which frees me try to play the stuff that passes through my head at any given moment. That's about all I ask for.
