Double Bass Evah Pirazzi strings megathread part II

Just finished installing a set of EP Weich on my Shen Rogeri 300. It's a big bass with 411/4 string length. My initial impression is that they are a bit boingier than the standard gauge, and will need a lighter touch with the bow. Got a noamp gig tonight-we'll see, but my first impressions are favorable.

I'd be interested to hear your comparisons between the regulars and weichs in terms of character of sound, power of fundamental, and feel. I just switched from regulars to weichs two days ago. So far, so good.

Here's a VERY initial impression: like I said before, the Weichs feel boingier; there seems to be a little more pop on the initial attack (pizz), and there seems to be a bit more tonal variation depending on playing distance from the bridge. This could all be a factor of just-installed strings. Volumewise, my (initial) impression is that they're the same or a bit louder, and punchier as well. The fundamental, on my bass, is still there. My orchestra playing is over til next fall, so that part willl have to wait unless I can get a real bower to come over to check things out. I'll probably post after the gig tonight.

I have had them on for a little more than a week and think they sound and feel great.I have gigged only once with them so far and I'm very happy with how they sound,they are the best sounding strings I have had on my bass.I will add more as they settle in a bit.

Cautious optimism after the gig (tpt, sax, electric keys, tasteful drummer). Sax player said he could hear me better, the sound was punchier. I think they have a point at which playing harder doesn't equal louder. To really dig in, I felt like I needed to get right down at the end of the fingerboard. Finding the sweet spot regarding string height will be necessary.

Interesting. Weichs punchier than regulars? I still need more time with them to comment on that one. I agree about the string height issue. It seems that what's optimum (for me, anyway) with the weichs will differ from what was optimal for the regulars. Still liking 'em-- especially the change in the G string.

ok, i just broke down and ordered a set. i have been playing on the regulars for about 7 months and have really liked them better than any other string that i had played. the only other string i have liked as much were the spiro weich's, not for the sound as much as the tension. hopefully these will be a happy in between of the ep regulars and the spiro weich's. i ordered mine from bob g, did it on line so i'm not sure he has them in stock but he has them on his web site.

I bought a set of Evahs last fall. They were intended for my Kay,turned out the Kay didn't like them at all. Too heavy and stiff, they seemed to choke the resonance right out of it. BTW Obligatos seem to be the Kay's favorite. My other bass is a Wan Bernadel. I had been using the Kay for jazz and the Wan for orchestra. Lately I am playing the Wan in Big bands, too- more punch. I had Belcantos on it. I'd been thinking lately about those Evahs, so I threw 'em on today. First thing I noticed, the action seemed about twice as high, just from the strings. Down three turns, OK that's more like it. Still a little stiff pizzacato. Big sound. Then I tried the bow. WOW! I did not expect them to out-arco Belcantos, but there it is, volume, timbre, and easy starts. But they still feel a little stiff. And so I ask, do the weichs bow as well? I'm a little afraid to find out, the string disease is lying in wait.

I agree-I won't have any section work til next fall, but after a couple days of long tones, I don't detect any loss of volume from the regulars. Regarding tension, they're less stiff without being loose, if that makes any sense. I'll check in again in a month or so.

I'm thinking I'm gonna like the Weichs. For me, the softer tension should improve pizz a lot. The arco is already the best I've tried. Time to have some buttons made.. I Like Weichs. Do the originals loosen up over time? This set was on the Kay about three weeks but only played at gigs, all my practice was on the Wan.
