Double Bass Evah Pirazzi strings megathread part II

Peder,

Are still studying at KMH this autumn or is this your last year? I would love to try this setup of yours.

Andreas- "Grattis" on making it in into the royal school! ;) I was impressed by the sound you had with your plain gut(or was it garbo?) strings and playing. I'm applying for exchange study next semester so maybe I will not be in stockholm, but I have one year left to go so I will be there next spring for sure. If you are visiting stockholm anytime before July send me a pm and we'll arrange something :bassist:, of course I'd like to check out your bass as well.

However, you should be aware that I'm playing a student 3/4 GEWA bass, not exactly on the high end of the double bass market... but I guess you could get a feel of what the strings are like anyway and the bass is pretty well setup.

Peder, "Tack"! It really feels great.

My bass is strung up with Velvet Garbo E+A and Artone plain gut D+G. It's a good combo to get a decent old-school sound.

We'll probably bump into eachother sometime, that's for sure ;)

Well, today the Evah Weichs went on. In the spirit of full disclosure, Adrian Mueller sent me a test set a little while back. They've only been on for a matter of hours but my first impressions seem to be consistent with what others have said. The Weichs are certainly less stiff than the regular set and, for me anyway, at this early stage, the difference in the G is what really stands out. It is far more supple and easy to play up the fingerboard than was the regular.

More to come...

I played my 1st gig w/ them tonight w/ drums & gtr. They sounded fine w/ the fishman full circle pick-up, but the jack had a problem & it stopped working after the 1st tune. I also have a realist on my bass, so I used it the rest of the night. It was a dreadful combination. The sound was balanced but very dead. It really got lost behind the drums, & he wasn't playing very loud. Walking was fine, but I couldn't get the extra punch for solos. The sound just didn't cut through as It does with steel strings(spiros, FCS, etc). If I can't get my full circle fixed by tomorrow I'll us my old clip on fishman or underwood. My advise so far is don't try these strings w/ a realist. I should have kept my underwood in the bag as a back up.

Just put a set on that they sent me.Played for an hour. I agree with everything except for one thing. On my Golia which is new, but is a dark bass the G string sounds a bit dull. Duller than the D string . Very warm, but not open and expansive. A bit shorter sustain, too. Possibly a bad string? My experience with new strings is that they're too bright and raucous. I wouldn't mind this being a bit more raucous. Now I'm a Spiro Mittel guy, but the last set I changed on my other bass was on for 10 years. I like dark, but articulate. I had the regular EP's and thought that they were too stiff and had a tendancy of getting lost in the mix. Do you think that the G will open up with playing? To me that's counterintuitive as most strings I've played got tighter and more focused, but not more open.

Hmm. Compared to the regular EPs, I find the G weich to be, if anything, more articulate. Comparing the D to G, I am not experiencing what you described. My bass is also quite dark sounding. In fact, after playing the weich set to compare it a bit to the regulars, I had a new sound post repositioned a bit to make the bass somewhat brighter. Even before that change I found the weich G especially to be a touch more articulate than the regular.

Yeah, Les what you say is common sense to me, too, Checked the string slot in case it was binding, Nope. Even with the Spirocore Weichs which are a bit darker than the Mittels the Weichs while not being as powerful are a bit more open, not less. This G string definately has less sustain than the regular EP's. Any note where I play the same note on the D string as the G string, the note on the D string starts easier, is more open and sustains longer than on the G string. Should be the opposite. Methinks a bad G string here. I'll see if I can get another. I really want to like theses strings.

Like any "hybrid" string, the Evah Pirazzi Weichs seem to try to do a lot of things well, and some things not as well as strings that are designed to perform a specific musical task. They are probably a bit soft for aggressive arco, although I think that one could adapt to them. For me, they come closer to doing everything than any string that I can think of. I mentioned their balance and neutrality before, and that's probably my favorite aspect of them. Any given note on my bass sounds equal to any other note, which frees me try to play the stuff that passes through my head at any given moment. That's about all I ask for.

Yes, yes, yes and yes. That's right, Marcus. And yes, they are very articulate and I can hear every note and pitch well. A bit more dark "old school" sound than spiros. After a few more gigs, I am really liking these strings.

Sounds like you might have a bad G, Mike. I'm not noticing that effect... Check 'em out on my bass if you want.

It's amazing, given the vast interactions among basses, strings, and preferences, how we all agree! In any case, I don't find either type of Evah to have anything like the sustain and brightness of a Spiro. After all, we're taking about synthetic core vs. an all-steel string. I happen to prefer the darker sound of the Evahs. I suspect many will not.

I do have a question for those who have used both the regular and weich Evahs. Do you find the A string to be as powerful? Granted, I made more than one change to my bass nearly at the same time and like the sound better. I do find, however, that, for example, the C in 1st position on the A string doesn't rattle the windows quite like it did with the regular Evahs. I'd appreciate feedback on this.

No, I don't find the weich set as a whole to be as powerful as the regulars. I got the most acoustic volume from my bass ever with the regulars.

thanks, this answer saved me 200€!

Oh, I wouldn't pass on them because of that! On my bass anyway, the Evah weichs are still quite powerful and, in my estimation, more so than many other strings (Doms, Obligatos, Spiros). I don't know if you are using the Evah regulars now but they are like putting bridge cables on your bass. They are rather large gauge and somewhat stiff so I guess it's no surprise that they produce HUGE acoustic output. In my case, much as I love playing on beefy strings with higher than typical string heights, there was a price to be paid. At this early stage, it seems as if the weichs provide almost all of that huge punch coupled with greater playability. For me, they seem closer to the ideal. The truth is that my bass is quite loud and has been described as "thunderous." The weichs seem to be just fine.

On my bass, the volume sounds about equal between the regs and the weichs. The character of the sound is different, but the volume's the same. No problem playing unamplified with the Weichs for me. Louder than any Spiros on my bass. The only louder string that I've had on there were Animas.

I have recently put Eudoxa on my bass, the are settling in and I am starting to really like them. The only thing I do not like is the price. And somebody told me that they last about 6 months. I had Evah Pirrazzi regular on my bass, the sound was good but a bit twangy and the tension was killing my hand. If anybody tried the Eudoxa, how would you compare the Weich with them?

Same here.. they're not overly stiff. They felt quite supple after a few weeks. You need to play them in a little.

I went to Weichs just because I wanted a little more flexibility. The sound is just a tad more "modern" too, which suits my needs very well at the moment.

I agree. I didn't find the regular Evahs uncomfortable after playing them in but they were always a bit stiff, compared, say, to Doms. I find the weichs less stiff (makes sense, they're weich!) and yes, they are just as loud but with somewhat less low-end boom-- at least on my bass and to my ears. As you said, "the character of the sound is different" and my bass could do well with a bit of "brightening." Of course, I should check back in after they've been on for a few weeks. If they're like the regulars, they'll only get better.
