Evening everyone...

Can't believe my account is still active after so many years.

Started to get the hankering to get back into music in a small home studio setting and figured bass as it was my first love and do you really ever forget ;) Now to the big problem....I'm left handed. Been looking at the usual places and pickings are still slim. Was looking at a Fender American J-Bass. A little disappointed at no maple neck everywhere I looked. Not sure of the quality of the lower ends, I'm guessing they're MIM's. When I was playing guitar I had luck with the Fender MIM strats I had. Would love to get a Geddy Lee but they don't make them left handed. I did price out a Warmoth build and it was fairly compatible. Any other manufacturers that make a decent 4 string lefty? I'd like to stay in the $1k area but if I gotta pay more for quality so be it. Just looking for opinions.

If you're set on a Jazz bass, people seem to like the new Player Series basses and the price is right...under $700.
The thing is, the MIMs are better now than they've ever been before.
If you have been out of circulation, you might be really surprised at how good the Squier Vintage Modefied Jazz bass is, too. Do a quick search...countless posts about them, and you can buy them new for $350 and have plenty of money left over for a nice Fender Rumble 200.

Nice MIJ on reverb.

And if you really want to start off right, G&L is the way to go

(All maple fretboards, just as you like.)

G&L l2000 comes in lefty. The import tribute series is very affordable, they sound great, and they're well made (I've got a tribute l2500 and I love it). The US made models are around $1k used, although you might have to hunt for a lefty.

There are some pretty decent lefties for under a thousand. I recently swapped (with $$ thrown in) a P bass and received a Sire V7 fiver, maple neck, etc. Now I am a fan. They are certainly not the best in the world, but pretty darned good for under a thousand.

Appreciate the help guys. Thinking about getting a Schecter J-4. The dots are ugly as hell but Schecter has a pretty good rep of not letting garbage leave the factory. I'm pretty sure it's not an American build but price looks pretty good. Alder Body/Maple Neck, plus I actually like the color. Think I'll pair it up with a Orange Crush 100 as it's basically only for home use.

Yesterday, I tried the newer "Player Series" jazz, and it was a nice instrument.
It was a right-handed model. I went into the store expecting to find a lefty, but I made the mistake of assuming their Reverb listings reflected the floor stock. And the sales staff wasn't too eager to track it down. ("Our Reverb guy is on a conference call.")

Based on that experience, though, I would recommend buying one if you want to keep the price down. I think the white and the back model both have a maple fretboard. The neck has a satin finish, and the overall quality was great for the price, I think.

But...

This G&L JB is probably fantastic. G&L is a better resource for left-handed models. And based on direct comparison, I would rate USA G&L quality higher than USA Fender (after trying a few lefty Precisions back-to-back with the LB-100).

I was planning to buy this myself (once someone buys my Stingray 5), but you should check this out. Lots of great options, and a fantastic deal:

Rocket Music - GLJBBlonde

See the offered price in this post (assuming the offer still stands):
Insane Special Of The Week

Buy it before I do, so I'll have an excuse to make a custom order.

Haven't read all the thread, but in this price range you're going to find quite a few options (assuming you're looking for Jazz-style)

G&L Tributes
Sires
Fenders of almost all types if you're willing to buy used
Schecter

and there are a bunch of more exotic stuff like
Maruszczyk
Sandberg (possibly a bit over budget new)
Eastwood
Carvin

According to your profile, it's been one year and a couple months. :roflmao:

But yeah, welcome back, man. I think you could probably pick up a nice G&L lefty in the sub 1k range. Or build yourself a nice custom Warmoth for that price.

Yeah it's odd, most forums they cull inactive users after a certain time period. I swear I haven't logged in since like 06 ;) But thanks for the re-welcome.
