Ever hate a song so much you'd risk being fired?

Nostalgia is funny. I'm 45, and all the guys in high school with the Led Zep shirts would tell me "Journey is crap, soulless corporate rock". The same dudes now scream along with "Don't Stop Believing" at the top of their lungs if it comes over the PA at a ball game.

True. I find myself playing songs from the 60's and 70's that I once considered too bubble gum to play. And I enjoy it. It's sort of the premise of Woody Allen's movie 'Midnight in Paris'.

Update......

At Wednesday night's rehearsal we started planning setlists for four gigs we have coming up. At some point in time, our BL/ guitarist strummed the first few chords of CMM. Our singer said "Don't even think about it. I'll walk off the stage". We continued building our lists. Yours truly never spoke a word.

That's a whole night of work for me.:D

You think you guys got it bad?

I get to play this;

At least we don't take it too seriously. I don't know whether to laugh or cry when we do it.

But it's just one song. I can live with the shame.....:smug:

Hmmmm.....think the question for me is who are you playing for...yourselves or the crowd? If the person cutting the check asks for a specific song...then you owe them an answer...yes or no. A band can always turn down a gig. And face it...we all have those songs o our set list we hate. For me i do not know if i will ever get entirely through im a believer or pretty woman ever again. Best of luck!

I got replaced in a band because i didn't want to play Dokken - its not love LOL. Funny thing was i was going to quit anyways because i seen the band going nowhere. Sure enough they are still a garage band and my new band already has gigs book after 3 weeks together.

I figured I'd bump this as I'm in a similar situation. There's very few songs that I'll ever raise issue with, but one BL I work with has suggested "Blurred Lines" by Robin Thicke.
It's hard for me to play a tune that is blatant rip off of one of my favorite tunes, "Got to Give It Up". What makes it worse is that the band is a bunch of middle aged dudes, and I think we'd look ridiculous singing this one. Plus I don't like the tune. Maybe if it were a different band and audience.....

Not a blatant rippoff at all. Don't get caught up in the hype! The groove is similar and that is it! There have been 100's of songs that have taken from others (Another One Bites The Dust<>Good Times) and no one made as many waves as Blurred Lines. It's a great dance tune and it will fill the floor! Don't do that to yourself!

Lastly, I'm 54 and have no issue playing it or any song younger bands would typically play. I'll play anything if it makes sense to do so. I don't think any song is so sacred that nothing can be borrowed from it.

1st time I saw this thread, and had to chime in..

Looks like i'm the only one who doesn't have a problem with playing Call Me Maybe then. My band do a more pop-punk version of it (without all the synths and a little heavier) and i think it's a blast to play.

Liam

+1

My band played it when it was "super hot" on the radio.
The chicks LOVED IT..LOVED it.

(then again this is the stuff we play anyway, only slightly rocked out, with 2 guitars)

You play what you want- I'll play what the chicks want. Theres nothin better than a crowded dance floor full of perfectly tanned, almost naked beach hotties singin' along to what your playin.

[as much as I hate to say it, I am man enough to admit that I enjoy some of the pop/top 40 music of today] :hiding:

I've done my time in bands where we played just what "we" wanted, or "songs that all other bands dont play"..and played our hearts out -to all 5 people at the bar.

I like playing to packed dance floors MUCH, MUCH better.

BTW, this day in age, with music going where it is.. bands are competing with DJs, so..ya either play it ..or play biker bars where people still accept classic rock.

edit to throw in that I personally like "Blurred Lines". & I can only hope not many other bands are doing it. ;)

If I am getting paid by a party (single person or actual party) to play music for them, I have no issue playing Call me maybe, or Blurred Lines. They are paying me to play them the music they like. That is what I get into playing in the type of band that offers that service.

Plus the ladies like it and it makes people happy.

My soul stays intact.

FWIW: There’s some songs I don’t like - but if I’m being paid and it’s requested I’ll play it and with a smile.
