Double Bass Ever seen a wood Glasser bow?

I dont even remember. They've expanded their line and stopped making the one I got, though I do remember it was their high end bow. Your results may vary. If I could go back, I may have just paid to have the original rehair'd and played it. Most people I called to see if they would rehair/ repair it didnt believe I actually had a wood glasser. They thought they didnt exist.

Yeah, I hope I can find someone to repair it. Mine does not need any repairs.

The higher 3 strings look like gut, and I can actually tune those to sound pretty good. The low E string is roundwound and is rusty. I can only get a thud from that string. I play mostly blues, bluegrass, jazz and folk but open to other types of music and definitely want to learn how to bow the instrument! Thanks for all your help and input! Looking for good online upright bass lessons as well, as this baby is not going to fit in my car lol.

If they are in playable shape I’d keep them for your type of music and that kind of bass.

Yeah, I was thinking maybe I would try to do that and just replace the low E since it is really rusty and will not tune for me. The music store tech told me I could just trim off the broken horse hair from my bow and still use it (if it is less than 50% of the hair, which it is). So lots of good news.

Roundwound E and the higher strings are gut? The E is probably wound gut, and the plating has worn off, allowing the ferrous component to rust. Wound gut strings are harder to keep in tune than plain gut.

Gut strings are highly prized (and priced) for many players on TalkBass, especially for "roots" music. They can be bowed, although it takes more attention to detail. I - and probably many others - will recommend a Spirocore weich (light gauge) E string.

Thanks! I was actually able to tune and clean the low E....so I will put off (for now) buying strings. I have to see if they will even stay in tune; for now they don't at all, but hopefully they just need to get used to my house (and being tuned) - the previous owner never played it, but owned it for 10 years! It is a beautiful bass, but I definitely plan on learning to play it (including using a bow).

I should have mentioned, the frog is not original. That was my student bow, that I probably got sometime around 1977. There was a small screw holding the slide in. When I had it re-haired, the shop had a spare frog that they were willing to give me.

My son, a good cellist, doesn't think much of it. But it plays well for me, and seems easy to manage when I'm trying to play jazz.
