Ever set something down.....

BTDT...and it can happen in an eyeblink.

I was once finishing a head job on a '66 GTO. I had everything back together, set the rocker arm covers in place, and I set down the adapter I needed to secure the bolts on each rocker arm cover. The GTO had a nice broad sheet metal area on the nose where the hood latched - nice place to sit an adapter for a moment.

I rached past the front of the engine to move one piece, reached back - and the adapter was gone. 3 seconds had elapsed.

I spent a half hour searching for it, getting progressively more frustrated and irate - let's say I was freakin' PISSED! (Learned a lesson from that, too).

FINALLY I got down on my back under the front end...on a floor with water and antifreeze soaking into my shirt - I looked up inside the front end, and there was the adapter, balanced perfectly on a thin strip of metal behind the grille.

I must have brushed it with my sleeve, it fell through the hole where the hood latched, and it landed on that thin metal strip and stayed there even though I bounced that front end up and down repeatedly, trying to make it fall out if it was hung up.

Weird.

Have you checked the bathroom?

Yep, and it's not there. Not to keep repeating myself here, but on that day I retraced my steps numerous times thinking "I must have had it in my hand and set it down along the way and just can't remember." I looked at everything along the way to the work bench in the basement and back and it's gone. I even had a box on the back deck with other tools I was using and thought I probably put it in there but it wasn't there either.

I KNOW it's here somewhere. Just hope I never set one of my basses down and can't remember where I left it!!!

You know, either that, or all the weed.;)

And to think your bikes metric. The irony of it.
I don't only work on metric motorcycles. :eyebrow:
as a matter of fact, my metric bike (I only have 1 at the moment) hardly ever requires any mechanical attention at all.

fwiw: British bikes are not metric, ever heard of whitworth?
Irony? I don't see any!

EDIT: I don't know how many 10 and 12 mm. wrenches and sockets that I have, but I know it's quite a few of each.

OCD =/= neatness or organization...that's like calling yourself autistic because you play WoW and dislike the noise of chainsaws.

Excessive organization, and obsessive neatness is OCD by its very definition. An excessive, obsessive, & uncontrollable compulsion to clean, and keep unneeded track of objects.

He obviously is not OCD, but is stating that his behavior is similar, & noticed by friends.

That's 0 for 2 tonight.

Just tonight I realized my cd of Deep Purple's Machine Head is missing. Cd rack is organized & full; it's the only thing missing. I've checked every room and the car...nothing.

I know I didn't lend it out to anyone, I know my daughter wouldn't have taken it (what 8yr old girl wants a Deep Purple cd?), it's just gone. No idea what happened to it, and it's driving me nuts. :atoz:

I'm not really sure where you're getting your "definition" from; but even the quickest Google search should set you straight.

That's 0 for 2 tonight.

Ever see one of those old Simpsons reruns where Homer tries to get sarcastic with Smithers, or Lisa, or even Stephen Hawking?

That's you tonight.

I'm going to avoid a Google search and just shorten my explanation up for you.

OCD = Obsessive Compulsive Disorder

Obsessively compulsive about keeping things in order, Obsessively about keeping track of things are definitely in line with an OCD personality.

How are they not?

If it isn't in front of me for at least 20 seconds every couple days, I completely forget that I own it. I left one of my basses in my mothers bedroom so that the temp changes in my bedroom wouldn't damage the finish. Now 2.5 months later I am walking through the room and I see it on a stand in the corner and remember that I haven't seen it in forever!!

Guitar picks always go missing, but I have this box that is FULL of picks that I just grab out of when I need a pick. I finally found it after weeks of searching... It was in my tool box next to the soldering equipment.

At work I always misplace my calipers right before I need them. Usually they're on the bench next to a machine that I haven't been even remotely close to for what seems like hours.

And I'm only 19 :P

I do that all the time. I'm good about putting stuff away when I'm done using it, but the problem (for me) arises while I'm using it. Like, I'm working outside with a wrench, and it's hot so I decide I need to get a hat. Come inside, get the hat, go back out, where the he11's the wrench? Go back in, check the hat shelf, nope, not there. Go back out, search the work area, not there. Go back in, check the kitchen, bathroom, top of TV, nope. Pockets? Nope. Arrgh!

Basically if I put something down without making a mental note of it, I'll spend ten times the energy trying to find it again.
