Ever set something down.....

I have developed a habit of describing out loud, severally times, the spot where I put the tool down as I do it-"right there, on the shelf with the spray paint, that's where it is, that shelf right there. With the spray paint." Or it's gone. I don't even bother searching anymore. Just get in the car.

For me, half the battle of fixing anything is finding the tools I need....sometimes that takes longer than the fix.

Every once in a great while, I'll get everything together, sorted out and organized, and discover I have 4 or 5 of everything. Then they start finding hiding places again until I'm back where I started.....with 5 caulk guns and can't find one of them.

I don't know why but I am opposite of this when it comes to my music gear. There, I know where everything is. Can just grab stuff and go and have all the right cables plus backups for everything.

This happens to me occasionally. But more often, I'm afflicted with a slightly different but related disease. It's called Destinesia.

It's the act of entering a room and forgetting why.

Oh man, when that happens to me it's bad/borderline comical.

I was clearing out my bedroom closet and put a bunch of things into a box to take to the basement. Took the box, walked thru the kitchen to the top of the basement stairs and realized I was very thirsty. I SET THE BOX DOWN at the foot of the stairs, got a drink of water then proceeded to walk RIGHT PAST THE BOX, walked down the stairs and just stood there in the basement like a total idiot trying to remember why I went down there. I then walked back up the stairs, walked RIGHT PAST THE BOX and still couldn't remember why I went to the basement.

It hit me like a ton of bricks about 3 minutes later. :rollno:

I thought..."please, will someone just shoot me now!"

Did that yesterday- I spent a half hour looking for two PCB mount pots I had ordered to repair my guitarist's Line 6. I was pretty sure they were still in the little white bubble envelope they had been shipped in. I tore the darn house apart and was getting really frustrated when I happened to notice them on the garage floor tucked under one of my motorcycles. I think one of the kids must have moved them grrrrr

That is OCPD, a completely different disorder.

Are you always this desperate to try and be right about something?

We're discussing an off the hip comment that Jmatt made about his being a bit on the obsessive side when it comes to organization. At NO POINT did he insinuate ANYTHING about actually being OCD, but only that his friends sometimes JOKE around with him about it because of it.
I'm not sure if you're obsessively trying to diagnose him, but I doubt it's needed.
Maybe you're desperately attempting to correct his friends humor vicariously through me. Still pretty pointless, and channeled very poorly.
If you're attempting to correct me, I'm still a little confused as you MUST be aware that I was pretty clear in saying that those characteristics are IN LINE with OCD. Obviously more info would be needed, and a professional's diagnosis would help. BUT WE'RE NOT DIAGNOSING ANYONE HERE FRIEND!!!!!!
We're talking about a friendly joke among friends, said facetiously and most likely intended to be humorous.

I can't possibly think of a more irrelevant, pointless, ridiculous and useless debate we could be having here right now.
Nobody is attempting to officially diagnose anyone, and certainly they likely couldn't possibly care less if their description is/was scientifically accurate or not. I certainly do not.

But to entertain you a bit; The point as was OBVIOUSLY made, was that his need to clean was JOKINGLY comparable to a person with uncontrollable, & obsessive compulsions to clean, and organize IE; OCD.

Characteristics of Obsessive-Compulsive Disorder

Obsessive-compulsive disorder (OCD) is an anxiety disorder, rather than a personality disorder, where you experience recurrent obsessions and compulsions.

Obsessions are:

Thoughts, images, or ideas that won’t go away, are unwanted and cause extreme distress.

Accepted as coming from your own mind, but often feel impossible to control.

Not simply worries about your everyday problems.

Distressing enough to cause you to try to get rid of the obsessions with other thoughts or actions, like compulsions.
Compulsions are:

Behaviors that you feel you must carry out over and over. Common compulsions include cleaning, counting, checking, requesting or demanding reassurance, and ensuring order and symmetry.

As I said they are IN LINE with OCD.
Neither of us have enough information, or expertise to go any further with it.
I don't know though, maybe you're a therapist, LCSW, Psychiatrist, Etc and you're suffering from a little OCPD about your profession, and just can't let it go as a joking comment between friends.

If you are, I'm DEFINITELY not interested in the debate, my father is a therapist. I've had enough of the psych lessons to last me a life time. No thanks!!!!!

Lets just agree to disagree! Deal?

If it makes you feel better, I'll even go against my position, & say you're 100% correct, just so we can move past it.

People like you are seriously allowed to own guns?

I've had to exercise more care with where I casually lay down tools n such.
Glaucoma has robbed me of much of my lower field of vision.
Makes it a lot harder to look for stuff.
So I rebuilt my shop with lots of storage and tool hangers.
Labeled EVERYTHING, and sorted through mountains of parts to bin.

Nowadays, if it isn't in the main shop, at the outside saw station,
the electronics work area, or the automotive shed,
I just grab my truck keys: wasted enough time already.

Of course, stuff I rarely use, still takes me a while to find where I put them away.
Like the plumbing snakes & F crimpers.

I too make trips down/upstairs, only to arrive to say "why am I here".
Sometimes bring up 3 different things outta the basement before I get the one I first thought of.

A daily task sheet is a handy thing...............

I have actually gone to the extent of making up songs to remember where I put stuff.

pwned!

Seriously guys who friggin cares... we're not in a 500 level psych course discussing the DSM-IV. why is it that people are so obsessed with being right all the time? Do you think a bunch of strangers care?

Lol, this has nothing to do with strangers.

This is the Internet. The greatest urinating contest to EVER to exist.
I'll be the first to admit, there are those unfortunate, & regrettable times where I allow myself to get sucked into the (I can pee faster, further, longer) mentality.

My apologies for my involvement Rat, and no hard feelings.
