EVERY KPM 1000 track on Spotify

A spotify user has compiled every available KPM 1000 track they could find. Spotify link:




For those who don't know: The KPM 1000 library was 'licensed music' library recorded in the UK in the late 20th century.
It was probably derided as artless Muzak for shopping, elevators, hold music, and low rent BBC productions at the time.
But it was immaculately recorded and performed by some of the most skilled and consummate professionals of the day,
in a time before MIDI sequencing and DAWs negated the need for real humans to make this stuff.
The styles are a juxtaposition of everything late 20th century music had to offer.

Personally I think it's amazing all around, and some of these players (and composers) were absolute monsters.

Alan Hankshaw's cuts in that collection are among the best.
The stuff with Herbie Flowers and Barry Morgan is gold for bassists

This stuff makes me want to take a dangerous assignment to fight crime on the Riviera while shopping for a sporty new coupe with the quirky girl from the apartment(uh, flat)next door. All of this in addition to my career as a fabulous designer/engineer/fashion photographer. If only life were that simple again.

I've been digging into the library stuff recently too. Bruton's catalogue has some good stuff too, I'm mainly into the ambient synth thing.
Trevor Bastow/John Cameron "Suspense/Galaxy" is a favourite and Alan Hawkshaw's "Frontiers Of Science".

Bumping this thread for another amazing Spotify discovery: KPM All Stars Live at the Jazz Cafe

Hearing these monster players and composers knock it out in a live setting is fun as hell.
In case there was any doubt these "muzak" guys could deliver.
If I had my druthers, I'd form a band that does this stuff.



Also sparked a rabbit hole of hunting down episodes of Dave Allen at large, which I remember from my childhood on local (American) PBS
