And therein lies a chunk of the problem. No one was willing to foot the bill for gasoline at $4.50 per gallon, so who are you banking on paying for the complete reformatting of infastructure across the country? Are you willing to pay for it? What if the cost for the changeover and the new fuel ends up costing you MORE than the equivalent of $4.50 per gallon? Still on board with it?

Before we even get to that stage, who is going to make the decision on which platform to go with? Let me help: The consumer....when it is cheap enough to replace gasoline. Until that happens, the arguments for a premature changeover are pointless.

Gas will for the forseeable future be cheaper than any alternatives - but that is mostly because we don't actually pay for all the costs associated with fossil fuels. Roll in the cost of covering all the externalities generated by gas, and it wouldn't be nearly so cheap.

When you foist a good chunk of the costs on the public at large and future generations, it's a lot easier to sell cheap.

combating air pollution due to fossil fuels is completely doable. we're not doing it. but it can easily be done.

what we should be worried about on an environmental standpoint is the pollution that already exists. for instance, the plastic in the oceans, especially in the garbage dump between japan and the US. just from the garbage known to exist it is severely screwed. and it's a very important habitat.
