Exercises to practice alternating and not raking

I'm a newbie at fingerstyle, but there's a similar debate in the flatpicking world between "all downstrokes" or "alternating up and down". Each has pros and cons.

Sorry if I spoke too soon assuming that raking is always bad. Clearly there are different schools of thought.

In my newbie experience with fingerstyle I've found SA makes each note more distinct and keeps the meter better. I might rake a chord because in that case the notes should blend and the whole thing feels like a single beat. I guess those kinds of problems could be fixed with practice, Jaco seemed to do OK.

Maybe it has to do with digging in too much. Playing with a lighter touch (and compressor?) would do much to keep raked notes at the same volume as alternated notes.
