I personally believe that once you reach a certain mid-grade level of quality, it's mostly taste that guides your purchase.
Modern manufacturing has advanced to the point where you can get a pretty decent piece of carved wood with frets for relatively little money. Fit and finish is generally acceptable on all but the cheapest crap. The biggest difference I see is in the rest of the hardware. Tuners may be flimsy, electronics substandard, etc. And of course where it's made. I tend to buy USA, although not exclusively. I've seen some Indonesian basses that played very well, although I wasn't blown away by their sound.
If I had a limited amount of money to spend and intended to play live, I'd probably put the bulk of the money into the amp and seek a decent, used player bass. I know that's heretical around here, but man playing with a band through a bad amp sucks.![]()
Amp is definately a key factor. I think bass is too though. I think shorting your quality on either is screwing one’s self.
