EXPLAIN THESE PICKUPS!

hey guys i have a 2001 fender deluxe active jazz V with non stock pickups i think. instead of two magnet poles per string the pickups provide one humbucker like pole per string. i bought the guitar used and i know that the electronics are made by fender(took off the pickguard) and when i checked the owners manual on this guitar off the fender website, the diagram provided actually shows these pick ups! so if anyone knows the story behind these pick ups please explain this to me!
p.s. my bass terminilogy is probably all out of whack sorry!

those were out before the "noiseless" offerings from fender. they're side-by-side humbuckers and don't sound half-bad.

Those were the Suhr designed pickups. He helped with the redesign back when he worked for Fender. Great stuff really - I would like a set for a parts J I'm working on putting together. Oh well - he sells them on his site, so no worries there.
